Characteristics of Massís
Massís is a white wine from Catalonia developed by Benjamin Romeo, producer of great wines like Contador. The winery is located in the Garraf massif, specifically Olesa de Bonesvalls. After Benjamin Romeo visited this town in 2007, he decided to start a new project, Vins Massís.
The climate in this area is Mediterranean characterized by dry, mild winters and not very hot summers and an average annual temperature of 14-15ºC. During spring and autumn there is more rain, 350 mm / year in the drier areas and 600 mm / year in the wettest areas. This wine is a blend of Xarel·lo (55%) Garraf and Garnacha Blanca (45%) from Terra Alta. As for processing, after the harvest and selection of grapes, they are de-stemmed. A must fermentation is conducted in barrels and cooled at a controlled temperature. Finally, Massís spends 8 months in the same French oak barrels (50% new and 50% formerly used) with its lees.
For many Catalan winemakers, the DO Catalunya is one of their best weapons for marketing their wines to the international market, since the image of their wine is significantly enhanced by a ‘Denominación de Origen’, which can certify a wines origin and quality. One of the initial positive effects is the fact that great wines are associated with a larger geographic area within the peninsula, in the same way as the Bordeaux region in France. For many producers, the DO Catalunya is a clear sign of the regions commitment towards a model of quality. This is especially beneficial for Catalan wines that previously did not come under another ‘Denominación de Origen’.
