Characteristics of Mas La Mola Negre

Mas la Mola Negre is a red wine produced by the winery Mas la Mola, in Poboleda, D.O.Q. Priorat.

 

Mas la Mola is a 7-hectare farm, currently cultivated by Jordi Masdeu and Alessandro Marchessan, intended to make their own wines in the Priorat area. They have come together to make high-quality wines with their own personality.

Vines are planted in two different areas of Poboleda. The Maccabeu vines, which are 35 years old, are planted on low-yield gravelly soils, and the plots with old Grenache, Carignan and White Grenache vines, are planted on sloping terrains with licorella slate, at 350-450 metres above sea level.

 

Mas la Mola Negre is a wine made with Red Grenache and Garnacha Peluda (Downy Grenache), from vineyards that are between 35 and 70 years old, with low yields. Harvesting is carried out manually selecting the grapes in the vineyard and in the winery. The grapes go through a cold maceration before the fermentation. This wine is aged for 15 months in barrels made from French Allier oak, of medium and fine grain.

 

Mas la Mola Negre is an intense, powerful and long-lasting wine. In the mouth, it is balanced and presents very ripe fruit. It perfectly expresses the personality of the wines of this area.

Tasting notes Mas La Mola Negre

The vintage began in autumn in the best possible way, with good rainfalls that would fill the water reserves for optimal growth development. Winter was characterised by low temperatures and even snow covered some areas of Priorat. March started wet and cold, which delayed the budding of the vines. In mid-May, flowering was encouraged and was followed by a somewhat unstable June with several rainfalls.
A year with a very good balance. This vintage was characterised by the absence of water stress for the plants. Winter and spring were favourable in terms of rainfall and temperatures were slightly higher than usual. At the time of budding, there was no rain, so the vines developed in a suitable manner. The flowering took place in a clean way and the Grenache vines settled in an excellent way. Summer was characterised by cool and dry days, but also humid, which led to good photosynthesis and growth of the plants. During the end of the summer, before the harvest, there was still some humidity, which preserved the freshness of the soil and, consequently, achieving a gradual ripening of the grapes, perfect to retain the aromas and the good acidity. The negative factor was the rain during the harvest days. In short, the vintage has been somewhat atypical for Priorat, with wines that are less voluminous than in a normal year in the area, but with a good acidity that is reflected in the wines and that will keep them optimal for many years.

Winery Mas la Mola

Priorat is craftsmanship and tradition, old and robust vines that are grown and born deep inside the province of Tarragona. They are grown on slopes that are sleety with low fertility and difficult to grow in. In Priorat they produce great red wines of an excellent quality, a maroon colour, robust, dense and rich flavour, intense aromas and sometimes there are reflections present of minerals from the soils.
