Characteristics of Mas d'en Compte

Mas d´en Compte is a great, very expressive red wine from the D.O. Priorat produced by the winery Celler de Cal Pla.
The grapes come the Mas d´en Compte´s estate near the municipality of Porrera, a little village with a long agriculture and viticulture tradition.
The grape varieties Grenache (50%), Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) and Carignan (45%) are used to make Mas d´en Compte. The Cabernet Sauvignon grapes are from vines over 15 years old and the Carignan grapes are from old vines of over 60 years of age.
An altitude of between 300 and 500 metres, with scarce annual rainfall and hot days and fresher nights give this wine its individual character.
The harvest is manual.
Fermentation occurs in stainless steel deposits.
Mas d´en Compte is aged for 14 months in new French oak barrels.
This wine will continue to mature in the bottle for the next 4-5 years, thus having great ageing capacity.
It is recommended decanting it at least an hour before serving.
Serve at 16.0ºC
Contains sulphites
We recommend decanting before consumption
Pairing
Mature cheese, Roasted red meats, Large game, Beef, Stew, Small game

Tasting notes Mas d'en Compte

We present the new 2016 vintage, characterised by the wettest winterin the last five years. Not only did it rain in winter, but there was also wet weather up until summer arrived, especially inMarch and April. In summer everything changed, and it was one of the driest inhistory, with only 28 litres being recorded between July and October. If we compare the temperatures in 2012 and 2016, the 2016 crophad to endure a much colder winter than in 2012, which turned outto be positive, since the frost cleared the fields ofvine parasites. During the spring, lower temperaturesthan in 2012 were also recorded.Due to all these climatic conditions there was a delay insprouting, which began on March 28th, and which led to a delayin flowering of between three and four weeks.Once the summer arrived, the Priorat got all the luck, sincethe rains disappeared, while in the rest of Europethey were incessant. It was something that nobody expected considering thewinter we’d had. Taking into account the delay insprouting, the harvest started around mid-October on some ofthe estates.Obtaining fresh wines with an extraordinary acidity is dueto this long duration of the grape in the strain that has so characterisedthis vintage.
The vintage began in autumn in the best possible way, with good rainfalls that would fill the water reserves for optimal growth development. Winter was characterised by low temperatures and even snow covered some areas of Priorat. March started wet and cold, which delayed the budding of the vines. In mid-May, flowering was encouraged and was followed by a somewhat unstable June with several rainfalls.
A year with a very good balance. This vintage was characterised by the absence of water stress for the plants. Winter and spring were favourable in terms of rainfall and temperatures were slightly higher than usual. At the time of budding, there was no rain, so the vines developed in a suitable manner. The flowering took place in a clean way and the Grenache vines settled in an excellent way. Summer was characterised by cool and dry days, but also humid, which led to good photosynthesis and growth of the plants. During the end of the summer, before the harvest, there was still some humidity, which preserved the freshness of the soil and, consequently, achieving a gradual ripening of the grapes, perfect to retain the aromas and the good acidity. The negative factor was the rain during the harvest days. In short, the vintage has been somewhat atypical for Priorat, with wines that are less voluminous than in a normal year in the area, but with a good acidity that is reflected in the wines and that will keep them optimal for many years.
A year that started with some problems with the flowering but ended up being very good. Winter was colder and rainier than usual. Spring continued with days of low temperatures and a lot of water that delayed flowering and the consequent setting problems until the end of March, affected production. After a complicated year, when the summer began, the rains stopped and the temperatures rose, providing excellent ripening due to optimal rainfall during the year. The year has therefore been one of the best in recent years. Fluidity, acidity and concentration augur for a long life of the wines of this vintage.
Sight Dark cherry colour with ruby red rim. Clean and bright. Strong, slightly tinted tears stain the glass. Nose Complex and concentrated nasal aromas. Such as in the case of the previous vintage, notes of red and black fruits prevail. However, in this wine they are fresher, at their optimum ripeness, juicer and more expressive.  The toasted notes, milky hints, spiced and balsamic aromas and mineral background which are very typical of Priorat, form an intense and pleasant set. Taste On the palate, this Spanish wine shows a powerful, bulky attack and an embracing mid palate marked by the fleshy notes of expressive fruit, a very well integrated acidity which freshens and defines the wine and an intense tannic sensation. Long, tasty and persistent finish which leaves nice toasted notes at retro-olfaction. Round, elegant and defined.

Sight The tasting repport of this wine is being translated. Meanwhile, you can check the Spanish version.
Sight Intense black cherry colour with thin ruby red edges. High robe. Clean and bright wine with dense tears. Nose Intense and elegant aromatic complexity. Initially, the ripe black fruit is timidly released and quickly gains in expressiveness. After swirling the glass, some vegetables and quite sweet spicy notes are noticed along with some aromas of tobacco and an outstanding minerality. After some more time, more complex aromas appear reminiscent of coffee, chocolate and toffee and of an intense, noble and elegant toasted aroma. Taste It is intense and well-bodied at the attack. It has a long, sweet, powerful but gentle and kind mid palate. Its well-balanced notes of fruit and wood are noticed along with some balsamic hints which become more noticeable than in the nose. It has a good acidity which provides the wine with a nice freshness. Its tannins still need some time to round out. Very long and very persistent finish with good aromas of mellow fruit and good toasted notes. A great, elegant and complex wine from Priorat. Very pleasant.

    Designation of Origin D.O.Q. Priorat

    Winery Cal Pla

Priorat is craftsmanship and tradition, old and robust vines that are grown and born deep inside the province of Tarragona. They are grown on slopes that are sleety with low fertility and difficult to grow in. In Priorat they produce great red wines of an excellent quality, a maroon colour, robust, dense and rich flavour, intense aromas and sometimes there are reflections present of minerals from the soils.

    Imágenes y situación D.O.Q. Priorat

Cal Pla is immersed in a process of controlled unification without losing the philosophy of a small boutique winery that produces high-quality wines and with a marked personality from its strategic location in Priorat. For eight generations, Cal Pla has made bulk wine from the family winery until in 1996, Joan Sangenís, the youngest one of the saga and with oenology studies, decided to introduce bottling and the most up-to-date oenology elements to produce renewed and labelled wines. Wines that transmitted, at the same time, the strength of the tradition of a family that has been dedicated to winemaking for more than two centuries.
