Characteristics of Martin Muthenthaler Spitzer Graben Grüner Veltliner

Martin Muthenthaler Spitzer Graben Grüner Veltliner is an organic white wine aged on lees made by Martin Muthenthaler with the Grüner Veltliner variety in Wachau (Lower Austria).

Martin Muthenthaler is a winegrower who, influenced by his teacher Veyder-Malberg, does not follow the typical Smaragd, Ferderspiel and Steinfeder labels, instead dedicating himself fully to independently describing the authentic expression of each of his plots in Spitzer Graben. With a cold climate, rocky terrain and minimal yields, he produces deliciously vibrant and exquisitely mineral wines.

Martin Muthenthaler Spitzer Graben Grüner Veltliner comes from 3 hectares in a valley near the Danube. These are strains planted in rocky soils and with no layer of humus. All cultivation is organic and the aim is to encourage local biodiversity. This meticulous and detailed work is completely manual.

In the winery, Martin Muthenthaler Spitzer Graben Grüner Veltliner is vinified using technologies that emulate ancient practices. To start with, they use a press that gently and slowly squeezes the grapes as if it were being done by foot. Then the resulting must ferments spontaneously with native yeasts in large, old 850-litre wooden barrels.

Martin Muthenthaler Spitzer Graben Grüner Veltliner is a Wachau white wine without any of the traditional labels and is characterised by its fresh tension and brilliant acidity.

Tasting notes Martin Muthenthaler Spitzer Graben Grüner Veltliner

Martin Muthenthaler Spitzer Graben Grüner Veltliner 2018 is a profiled wine with aromas of citrus and pome fruit, notes of fresh herbs and hints of cold stone. On the palate it is dry, vibrant and powerful. A lively, mineral wine that is full of electrifying energy. The finish is lingering and salty.
