Characteristics of Martín Códax Lías

Martín Codax Lías is a white wine from the D.O Rías Baixas produced by the winery Martín Codax. This is a monovarietal of Albariño.

The grape used to produce Martín Codax Lías originates from Pé Redondo, in the Valle do Salnés, an experimental vineyard, property of the winery.

In the winery, the grapes are fermented in stainless steel containers at a controlled 17ºC.

The oenologists have selected the best finest lees between all the containers found in the winery. These are used for the battonages, which lasts for 2 months.

At the last moment Martín Codax Lías, is aged for 10 months in stainless steel containers. The lees, that remain and provide a roundness and balance to the wine.

Tasting notes Martín Códax Lías

The 2017 vintage has been distinguished by the excellent health of the vineyard and the intense heat. Winter and spring were warmer than normal, accelerating the growth cycle 15 days and which was prolonged during summer, bringing forward the date of the harvest to the end of August. The growth cycle went smoothly, with good flowering and no notable pests. In summer, the drought worsened and in August they began to see symptoms of dehydration in the bunches. However, rains at the beginning of September restored the balance of the vineyard. The wines of this vintage are identified by having something more volume due to its warmth and great freshness. A vintage to enjoy young, or as it is the norm for great wines of the area, to save for a few years.
Sight Straw yellow with golden highlights. Clean and intense. Nose High intensity, notes of ripened white fruit and undertones of the ageing process. Taste Wide and voluminous. Notes of fruit and cream combined with smoked touches. Good refreshing acidity. Citric undertones. Long and persistent finish.
Sight A straw yellow colour with pale gold highlights. Intense, clean and very bright. Nose High intensity. Notes of ripe white fruit prevail (pear, apple, peach) which gradually give way to nuances from its ageing on its lees (yeasts, pastries, vanilla). Taste Broad, bulky attack. Nice feeling on the palate with a good concentration of fruit accompanied by creamy notes and smoky nuances. Very good acidity, refreshing and citrus, which adds depth. This white wine has a long and persistent finish that leaves fruity nuances and hints of bakery goods.

Hints of very ripe fruit (pear, apple, peach) appear along with very clear memories of the ageing on lees (yeast, vanilla). Creamy nose with a fruity and floral background and herbaceous hints. Designation of Origin D.O. Rías Baixas

Winery Martín Códax

Rías Baixas wines would not be where they are today without the native Albariño grape variety. Although red wines are also produced in Rías Baixas, practically 100% of Rías Baixas wines are white. Among them, the vast majority of them are made with the Albariño grape. As well as young wines, fresh and aromatic, the region also makes wines aged in the barrels, complex wines with great personalities. Albariño wines can either be single varieties, or be part of a blend with other characteristic grapes of the region: Treixadura, Loureira Blanca and Godello.

Imágenes y situación D.O. Rías Baixas

The first Albariño with the Martín Códax label was made from the 1986 harvest. Its name evokes the figure of a medieval poet and illustrious troubadour, and it was the first serious project in Rías Baixas to definitively challenge the image of sparse and cloudy wine. After years of hard work, large investments and difficult decisions, this winery has demonstrated that it not only holds a sixth sense for foretelling new trends in the wine market, but can also execute them with impeccable skill.
