Characteristics of Marko Selección Especial
Marko Selección Especial is a white wine from the D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina by Oxer Basteigieta in Kortezubi, Biscay.
Oxer Belastegi is himself from Kortezubi and began producing Chacolí in the family wineries. They currently work with 5 hectares of vineyards, divided across 8 different plots, all of which are cultivated and worked organically. The planted varieties are the native Hondarribi Zuri, Hondarribi Zuri Zerratie (Petit Corbou), y Iztiriota ttipia (Petit Manseng). The harvest is carried out manually.
Marko Selección Especial is produced using the oldest vineyards. The difference between this wine and Marko, is that this wine ferments in (500litre) barrels where it then ages for 3 months.
Marko Selección Especial is not a regular Chacolí, this is a great white wine with keeping potential. This wine offers a great complexity, from a blend of the soils, grapes and vinification.

The truth is that for many centuries, nobody gave txakolí wine serious consideration, and very few mourned its disappearance. Compared to powerful wines with a higher alcohol content, txakolí was considered a ‘little’ local wine (‘vinillo’) of little interest. For a long time, a wine’s alcohol content was its only introduction. There were periods where still very poor production methods had not allowed the varieties to speak for themselves, and what’s more, txakolí forms part of a family economy at the same home-grown level as meat, milk and fish. In addition, the txacolí industry has not been advanced or prepared enough to rigorously produce this small oenological joy until the last few decades.
