Characteristics of Mar de Frades Finca Valiñas

Mar de Frades Finca Valiñas is an Albariño white wine made in the D.O. Rias Baixas by the Mar de Frades winery.

The name Mar de Frades is taken from the place where pilgrims used to land to continue on their journey to Santiago de Compostela. Located in the heart of the Salnés Valley, in the Galician province of Pontevedra, this is a winery that finds itself in a special place. Impressive hillsides facing the Arosa estuary, directly influenced by the breeze. Since 1987, this winery has been lovingly cultivating the crown variety of the D.O. Rias Baixas: the Albariño.

Mar de Frades Finca Valiñas is made from 45-year-old vines lying at more than 125 metres above sea level. They use traditional agriculture and all the grapes are harvested by hand, with a double manual selection process for the clusters to ensure they use the best quality berries.

When the grape reaches the winery, it is macerated cold in stainless steel tanks. Mar de Frades Finca Valiñas goes through periodic batonnage with the finest lees for 3 months in the barrel and 5 months in stainless steel. It finally ages for 6 months on its lees in new French oak barrels. It rests in the bottle before being sold.

Mar de Frades Finca Valiñas is a most floral, saline and elegant Galician white that comes from a part of the Atlantic where the Albariño variety grows at its very best.

Designation of Origin D.O. Rías Baixas

    Winery Mar de Frades

Rías Baixas wines would not be where they are today without the native Albariño grape variety. Although red wines are also produced in Rías Baixas, practically 100% of Rías Baixas wines are white. Among them, the vast majority of them are made with the Albariño grape. As well as young wines, fresh and aromatic, the region also makes wines aged in the barrels, complex wines with great personalities. Albariño wines can either be single varieties, or be part of a blend with other characteristic grapes of the region: Treixadura, Loureira Blanca and Godello.
