Characteristics of Majuelos de Callejo

Majuelos Callejo is a red wine from Ribera del Duero produced by Bodegas Félix Callejo in Sotillo de la Ribera, a small population of just over 500 inhabitants located in the province of Burgos.

Majuelos Callejo is a single variety of Tinta Fina. The grapes come from a single vineyard, located in the same town, planted at an altitude ranging from 850 to 930 meters above sea level. At this altitude, there are very marked temperature changes between day and night, which favours proper maturation and therefore balanced acidity. The soils vary from calcareous soils in the higher parts to the sandy and stony soils in the lower areas. The variety of soils provide different nuances to the wine.
Harvesting is done by hand in small plastic boxes. Once in the winery, the grapes undergo a double selection where the best grapes and grains are then chosen for processing. The fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts from the vineyard itself, starting at a low temperature and finishing at 30 degrees.
The grapes macerate with their skins for 15 days. The wine is aged in French oak for 18 months, applying slight movement to eliminate the residue. Majuelos Callejo is a very expressive wine marked by the diversity of soils and character of the Tinta Fina.

Tasting notes Majuelos de Callejo

After a dry winter, spring came loaded with rain. Thankfully, this water was stored, since it was much needed during the extremely dry summer. The low temperatures during spring delayed the sprouting of the vines, which led the growth cycle to start with delay. However, this delay was offset thanks to the high temperatures recorded in July and August, to the point of delaying ripening in those younger vineyards. The 2016 vintage beat the production record of the 2014 vintage. And not only in production, but also in quality due to the excellent weather conditions and the excellent health of the vineyards. The wines from this vintage offer a lot of volume, with a good capacity to face the passing of time, with roundness and spectacular tannins. A harvest reminiscent of those of the late 80s and early 90s.
The 2015 vintage started with a winter that had good groundwater reserves. The spring was warm and dry until well into the month of June, when there were intense rainfall at the beginning of the blooming. A summer with some well spread out storms gave way to a very dry autumn. The harvest was slightly ahead of the usual dates, but the analytical and organoleptic features, and the balance of the berries, were ideal. Thus enabled the harvest to take place at the optimal ripening time. The wines from this vintage, which was classified as excellent, have a good colour intensity, significant fruity notes on the nose and a high tannic potential in the mouth, with sweet tannins that indicate the good phenolic ripening of the berries. A vintage reminiscent of the exceptional 2005 vintage.
After the withering in a mild winter, the warm start of spring brought sprouting forward by almost 10 days. The summer, which was quite cool and dry, enabled the good evolution of the growth cycle and a balanced ripening. This was a vintage without setbacks. Worth mentioning is the high production of this vintage due to good climatic behaviour during the harvest. The wines from this vintage have great colour intensity, and a high fruity expression on the nose and in the mouth. Their balance and tannic potential stand out; these features show us the great potential to produce great wines for ageing, and for lighter and fruitier productions.
Sight

Dark cherry colour with violet hues, clean and bright.

Nose

Complex and very aromatic with a clean, defined nose. Aromas of ripe black fruit, plum, and blueberry with intense notes of pepper and pleasant toasted flavours, finishing with cocoa and fine leathers.

Taste

On the palate, it is a red wine with a large, juicy and very elegant entrance. There are notes of red and black fruit, cinnamon, nutmeg and some notes of pastry. Long finish.

Sight Picota cherry colour with ruby rum. Clean and bright. Abundant tears show on the glass. Nose Very intense, clean and defined with aromas of ripe black fruit, intense spicy notes and appetising toasted and roasted touches. Nice mineral background. Taste This red wine shows elegant and wide attack. It's tasty with good structure, good acidity and ripe tannins. Long and persistent finish.
Sight Dark cherry colour with maroon reflections. Bright wine with a high robe and dense tears. Nose Very nice and powerful aromas. Its marked notes of ripe black fruit, with abundant hints of dark cherries and blackberries, are released along with many spicy aromas (lots of vanilla) and mellow hints of cocoa on a great background of good toasted notes. Taste Embracing and very bulky wine. Its strength is still noticeable in the palate, but it is pleasant at the same time. This wine shows a long, tasty and balanced mid palate in which the highly expressive notes felt on the nose are very marked. It has a silky texture, an excellent and completely balanced acidity and polished and well integrated tannins. Very long and very persistent finish.  A wine to enjoy. A pleasure.
