Characteristics of Madremía

Madremía is a red wine from Toro, produced by Bodegas Divina Proporción, a winery that was founded in 2009. The vineyards were planted in 2010 and the first wine was released in 2011.

The climate in this area is continental with Atlantic influences, characterized by very hot summers (maximum 40 degrees) and very cold winters (minimum of -10 degrees), there is a large temperature variation between days and nights. This wine is a varietal Tinta de Toro from vines over 40 years old, farmed in an environmentally friendly manner.
As for processing, after manual harvesting, the grapes go into stainless steel tanks to be fermented. Subsequently, malolactic fermentation occurs in the barrel and the wine is then aged for 9 months in barrels of French and American oak.

Tasting notes Madremía

This is an excellent vintage in D.O. Toro. With a somewhat particular autumn due to scarce rainfall and slightly higher than normal temperatures. It wasn’t until early January that the rainfall went back to normal. From February to March, temperatures and rainfall were normal, so the water reserves and the growth cycle began correctly.Budding and flowering were delayed for a few days due to low temperatures in May.The high temperatures start at the end of June, boosting the flowering and growth process. The summer went by without any major weather events until mid-September, when light rains and a drop in temperatures led to a slower ripening until the start of the harvest, which arrived with an optimum degree of ripeness. The wines of this vintage present a great balance between ripeness and acidity. Wines fresh in their youth and prepared to age perfectly.
This year, which was described as a very good one, started with high temperatures that did not lower until the end of November. There were also quite low water reserves. In the early spring, temperatures began to rise, leading to the first bleedings of the vines. The beginning of the growth cycle did not present any major upheavals, except for the low humidity due to the lack of rain during the winter. During May, the vines began to develop their buds, causing the flowering during the first week of June. When they started to ripen, the drought and the stress on the vines was evident. At the end of August, there a certain amount of rain helped to hydrate the bunches, which helped to collect the healthiest grapes. As a result, we have a year with wines of a concentrated profile and some acidity. Perfect in their youth and with a medium ageing capacity.
The vintage began with a rainy autumn and low temperatures that produced frost for days in a row in December. At the beginning of March, temperatures began to recover and at the beginning of April, the start of the growth cycle was already visible. Due to the persistence of high temperatures, the growth of the vines took place faster, bringing forward the flowering. In June, temperatures dropped but in July they increased significantly, causing the dehydration of some berries. In August and early September the weather evolved normally, until the arrival of the harvest. As a result, we have a year with wines of good body and acidity. Fluid wines in their youth and with a good ageing capacity.
Sight

Cherry colour with ruby edges and purple hues. Clean and bright. High layer.

Nose

The nose is intense with notes of red and black fruits, intense floral notes, spices, toast.

Taste

The palate is powerful and structured. Great roles of fruit with spices. Good acidity. Long finish.

Sight Intense picota cherry colour with a ruby rim and violet reflections. Clean and bright. High robe, with abundant tinted tears on the glass. Nose Highly intense aromas dominated by strong fruity notes. The ripe red (redcurrant, cherries and ripe strawberries) and dark (blueberries, blackcurrant) fruits leave space for subtle and pleasant floral, spiced, sweet and spicy notes, as well as deep subtle toasted aromas that superbly accompany this fantastic ensemble of fruit. Taste This red wine has a powerful taste, with pervasive, juicy, fleshy fruit, a good acidity and firm and ripe tannins. Very well structured. A long and persistent finish with pleasant notes of fruit jam and spices felt at retro-olfaction. A very good quality-price-pleasure ratio.
Sight Intense dark cherry red colour with ruby red edges and violet reflections. Clean and bright. It has a high robe and abundant coloured tears. Nose High intensity nasal aromas dominated by an incredible explosion of fruit notes. Its notes of ripe red fruit such as redcurrant, cherries and ripe strawberries and its notes of black fruit such as blueberries and cassis, give way to light and pleasant floral aromas, sweet and hot spicy notes and a background of subtle toasted notes which are perfectly matched with the abundant fruit aromas. Taste This powerful red wine shows a mid palate once again marked by its abundant notes of juicy and fleshy fruit, a good acidity and a strong and ripe tannic sensation. Very well structured. Long and persistent finish which leaves nice notes of stewed fruit and spices at retro-olfaction. Very good value (and pleasure) for money.

01/25/17 Madremía 2015 I have not tried this vintage as I am still happily drinking my way through the 2011 vintage. That vintage is excellent, hence the rating. I must admit, I bought the first few bottles on the label, but it turned out to be a great decision. It is a powerful wine, but not too much so.

    Production area D.O. Toro

    Winery Divina Proporción

In Toro, the red wines are mainly made with the Tinta de Toro grape variety, planted on soils of fluvial origin by the influence of the Duero River and its tributaries, grown on poor, sandy and dry soils the further away you move from the river. Toro offers powerful wines, well bodied, flavourful, complex, and tannic. Although on a smaller scale, the region also produces white wines using the Verdejo and Malvasía varieties. Since the ´80’s, Toro has experienced a revival in its wines, thanks to a new generation of highly skilled winemakers and the installation of many big names in the region, such as Pintia, a winery belonging to the Vega Sicília group, or Teso la Monja, part of Sierra Cantabria.
