Characteristics of Macán Clásico
Macán Clásico is a red wine from Rioja developed by Benjamin de Rothschild & Vega Sicilia.
This winery was established as a result of the union of Benjamin de Rothschild, president of the Swiss financial group LCF Rothschild together with several wine-related projects worldwide, and Vega Sicilia, the famous Spanish winery.
Macán Clásico is a varietal made from grapes of Tempranillo from vineyards located in the town of Labastida.
After a careful selection of grapes and fermentation, Macán Clásico undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrels (30%) and deposits (70%).
Aging occurs for 15 months in French oak barrels of fine and extra fine grain, mostly in new oak barrels.
Macán Clásico uses the bordelaise tradition of producing first and second wines. Both are made up using exactly the same classification, when different batches are separated to be made into each of the two wines.
La Rioja is one of the most important areas of wine production in the world. It has a long history, and exceptional soils and climates. From the Tempranillo and Grenache varieties they make great red wines that are masterfully aged which demonstrates the experience passed from generation to generation.
This winery is a joint venture between Benjamin Rotschild & Vega Sicilla which began back in 1999. The partnership was not made public until mid-2010, where it was announced that the prestigious Spanish winery Vega Sicilia along with Benjamin Rothschild Group, a shareholder in the legendary Château Lafite and owner in several wineries in Argentina, South Africa and New Zealand, had chosen Sonsierra, a small town of Samaniego, to implement their first major project in La Rioja.
