Characteristics of M2 de Matallana
M2 de Matallana is a red wine from the Ribera del Duero produced by Telmo Rodriguez. The winery is located in the town of Lanciego (Álava).
M2 de Matallana is 100% produced from Tinto Fino. The grapes come from vineyards located in the areas of Sotillo, Roa, Fuentecen, Fuentemolinos, Pardilla and Fuentelisendo. 9ha of these vineyards are grown organically with 11ha following a traditional agriculture. The vineyard is planted on limestone river banks.
For processing the grapes are harvested by hand and the wine is made the traditional way. Once the grapes are in the winery, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts in wooden vats of 300kg.
After fermentation M2 de Matallana is aged for 14 months in new French oak barrels (50%) and used oak barrels (50%).

Regarding climate, the 2012 vintage started with the sprouting of the vines in the beginning of spring with the cooler temperatures. In May, generous rainfall and high temperatures gave way to a generalised drought throughout the summer. Luckily, the rains started at the onset of the ripening. The precipitations at the beginning of October, and the nice temperatures during the harvest, resulted in the a uniform phenolic ripening. The wines from this vintage have a good alcoholic strength, balanced by moderate levels of acidity, with a good colour and phenolic intensity, and a suitable level of tannins, all important features for a perfect ageing.
SightCherry red, medium high layer.NoseAromas of ripe red fruit with mineral notes, smoky and toasted flavours. Mineral background with spicy notes.TasteFresh and smooth entry. Very good astringency with well integrated tannins. Long and pleasant aftertaste.
2010 started with heavy frosts in winter and spring, causing a delay in the commencement of the growth cycle. Above all, this situation marked the vintage with a low yield harvest. This delay of the growth cycle was offset by a slightly mild but good ripening. This fact resulted in wines with greater structure, floral wines with very ripe fruit in compote, a little less acid than the 2009 vintage, but with an excellent quality and with a long life ahead. The low production and the excellent ripening helped classify this vintage as excellent.
The 2009 vintage started with a winter of low temperatures, which gave way to a cool spring. A dry summer, with warm days and mild nights, and great temperature changes between day and night, led to very balanced, complex and concentrated grapes. As for climate, it was the perfect vintage. This influenced the health of the grapes, which was excellent. Therefore, the wines from this vintage have a good acidity, which is responsible for long-lived wines with a good structure. And generally, responsible for very fruity wines with fresh red fruit that stands out. One of the great vintages of this region.
SightNice dark cherry colour with violet reflections and a medium-high robe. Clean and very bright.NoseIts aromas of ripe red fruit stand out. As it opens up, it shows mineral notes and nice toasted aromas that progressively turn into roasted notes. Its notes of fruit give way to glace fruit aromas and its minerality is intensified. The set is completed by spicy, earthy and undergrowth hints.TasteA wine with a bulky but extremely velvety attack. Its silky mid palate is marked by an excellent, sharp and integrated acidity and its very noticeable, ripe and pleasant tanins. Round wine with a long finish and a marked persistence.
