Lustau Almacenista Cayetano del Pino y Cia is a wine produced by Bodegas Lustau located in Jeréz de la Frontera, D.O. Jerez-Xerés -Sherry.

 

Bodegas Lustau, founded by José Ruiz-Berdejo i Veyan in 1896, has evolved from its beginnings as a stock keeper. Nowadays, they have 3 wineries in the different cities of the Sherry Triangle, Jeréz de la Frontera, Puerto de Santa María and Sanlúcar de Barrameda.

Bodegas Lustau has two vineyards in the Sherry Triangle, Viña Montegilillo, with white clay soils (albariza), very appropriate for the cultivation of Palomino. From this variety they obtains the musts for the production of manzanilla, fino, amontillado and oloroso wines. And Viña Las Cruces, near the coast, with sandy soils where they cultivate Muscatel and Pedro Ximénez, which they use for the production of sweet wines.

For some years, Bodegas Lustau produces the "Almacenistas" range (stock keepers' range). With these wines, Lustau aims to honour these "artisans" of wine. An "almacenista" was a winemaker who made and aged his own wines but who ending up selling his production to large wineries due to the lack of commercial contacts. Currently, as "almacenistas" or stock keepers, they are not allowed to sell bottled wine to the public. This means that a lot of them have disappeared. However, those who have made it through have exceptional "criaderas" and "soleras".

 

Lustau Almacenista Cayetano del Pino y Cia is a palo cortado wine made from Palomino Fino. It was aged in American oak butts for 20 years, following the traditional system of "Soleras" and "Criaderas". The "solera" row of this wine is comprised by only 22 butts.

 

Lustau Almacenista Cayetano del Pino y Cia is a wine with a biological and oxidative ageing. Intense and dry. On the nose, the aromas of dried fruit and nuts stand out, on a background of spices and notes reminiscent of coffee. In the mouth, it is round and glyceric, with a salty touch that makes it very long.

Winery Lustau

Sherry and wines from Jerez are probably Spain’s biggest contribution to the world of wine. Unique and special, there is nothing else like them in the world. A great diversity of Sherry wine is produced in DO Jerez-Sherry-Manzanilla de Sanlúcar, everything from sweet wines to fortified wines. Sweet wines are divided between Pedro Ximénez and Moscatel, depending on the variety used during production. Concerning fortified wines, there is a large range including Finos, Amontillado, Manzanilla, Oloroso, Medium, Cream and Palo Cortado, classified depending on the result of the ageing process under the ´velo flor´. A unique trait of these wines is the ageing process using the Solera Method, a system using various barrels from different vintages. The system uses stacked barrels, where a portion of a barrel’s contents is extracted and mixed with the lower barrel, with the barrel then filled with the contents of the upper barrel. Thus, the new wine is gradually coming to be thanks to the age of the rest of the content of screeds.
