Characteristics of Loxarel Àmfores

Amfores is a white wine produced by the Loxarel cellar in the Penedès. It is a varietal Xarelo. The grapes come from a farm, which during the Civil War was used as an airfield. It is situated at an altitude of 250 metres above sea level in the Alt Penedès.

The techniques used for agriculture are organic and biodynamic. Amfores is fermented in clay amphoras of 720 litres.

After this process, Amfores lies in the same containers for about five months. During aging, wild yeasts of the vineyard itself are added.

An amphora is a container that lets the wine breathe and keeps it fresh and constant through the "pitcher" or "sweating" effects.

The Mitjans family decided to start using this method after tasting wines produced in this way in Italy, Slovenia and Georgia.

Sight Pale yellow. Nose Mineral aromas. It is fresh and very varietal. Noted for its elegance. Taste Herbal touches, is smooth and bulky. With pleasant notes of ripe white fruit.
Sight A yellow colour. Nose Mineral, fresh and elegant in the nose with lots of aromas from the grape variety. Taste On the palate this wine is herbal, unctuous and rich with good volume and ripe white fruit.

Winery Loxarel

Today, the D.O Penedès is experimenting with viticulture and winemaking like no other region in Spain, home to a vast range of different grape varieties. The region is home to traditional white and red varieties, foreign ones, noble ones, permitted grapes, experimental grapes, and those that demostrate intrinsic qualities. As well as the grapes, the production techniques used are also worth noting, the location of the vineyards, the yields per hectare, the wines produced using traditional, original or even exclusive blends, the different ageing times, as well as the complexity of the different barrels used! But the reality is, given the vast diversity, it can be difficult to pinpoint what really defines a wine from Penedès, since there are so many types of wines and wineries in the region. However, the common denominator of all the wines from Penedès continues to be balance and quality.
