Characteristics of Loxarel 109
Loxarel 109 is a sparkling wine made by Bodega Loxarel in the municipality of Vilobí del Penedès, in the D.O.Penedés.
It's made from a base of 95% Xarel.lo grapes, a variety especially suited for long ageing, from the winery's vineyards grown according to the principles of organic and biodynamic farming, in order to express the flavor of the Penedès as best possible.
Loxarel 109 ages for 109 months in the silence of an old anti-aircraft shelter built during the Spanish Civil War, which is now used as a cellar.
It is made using the traditional method and is put on sale without being disgorged, still with its fine lees, which result in lots of volume in the mouth and a very creamy texture.
Loxarel 109 is put on sale with the bottle dirtied from the passing of time, without being washed after the long 109 months of ageing, and with the original cork. It is all wrapped in a lovely paper which reinforces the idea of an artisan product.

Today, the D.O Penedès is experimenting with viticulture and winemaking like no other region in Spain, home to a vast range of different grape varieties. As well as the grapes, the production techniques used are also worth noting, the location of the vineyards, the yields per hectare, the wines produced using traditional, original or even exclusive blends, the different ageing times, as well as the complexity of the different barrels used! But the reality is, given the vast diversity, it can be difficult to pinpoint what really defines a wine from Penedès, since there are so many types of wines and wineries in the region. However, the common denominator of all the wines from Penedès continues to be balance and quality.
