Characteristics of Las Rocas de San Alejandro
Las Rocas de San Alejandro Garnacha Viejos Viñedos is a red wine from Calatayud developed by the Cooperative cellar San Alejandro.
This winery was founded in 1962 and is in Miedes de Aragón (Zaragoza). San Alejandro Garnacha Viejos Viñedos is 100% made from Garnacha. The grapes come from vineyards grown in the mountains of Calatayud, at an altitude of between 800 and 1100 metres. The vineyards are very old, between 60 and 100 years and withstand extreme weather that causes a very low yield in the vineyard, a slow ripening of the grapes and late harvest.
In this difficult environment the mountainous rocks found in the soil where the vines are planted are providential. They help the vineyard to stockpile water and heat. For this reason the warehouse called this range of wines "Las Rocas".
Harvesting is performed during the first and second week of October. For processing the wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature of 24 ° C for 20-25 days with the skins. After fermentation, maceration for 21 days is carried out, also with the skins.
Finally, this red wine is aged for 12 months in American and French oak barrels. Regarding this wine collection, R. Parker said: "Definitely the best value wine in Europe I have ever tasted in my 25 year career" - The Wine Advocate # 152.

SightGarnet middle layer with ruby rim.NoseIntensely aromatic predominance of ripe red fruit. Mineral notes, spices and toast.TastePotent and round entry. It has a lot of volume, its path is tasty with hints of red fruit. Well balanced acidity. Long and slightly bitter finish.
SightPretty, ripe picota cherry colour, covered, with violet reflections. Abundant tinted tears stain the glass.NoseFragrant, intense, clean and well defined nose. Very ripe aromas of black fruit appear at first, along with liqueur and floral notes which gradually give way to intense spices, roasted notes and refreshing balsamic touches. Mineral nuances in the background. A magnificent nose! TasteDirect and powerful attack. Warming on the palate, gaining in width and structure. This wine is much more fresh and mineral than in the nose, with a long finish leaving delicious toasted notes at retro-olfaction. A fantastic grenache, absolutely recommendable, magnificent value for money.
The history and legendary Camino de Santiago to Navarra, with the resulting French and Central European cultural influence in the area, influenced in the Middle Ages the tradition of unique wines, centred on the use of the Garnacha Tinta grape variety. The modernisation of wineries, the careful choice of the vineyards, the incorporation of noble varieties, and the commitment of winemakers seeking more flavour instead of alcohol, has led to a new generation of Calatayud wines, which are fine, elegant and very personal.
