Characteristics of Ladredo
Ladredo is a red wine from Ribeira Sacra produced by Niepoort. Dirk Niepoort, settled in Oporto, has always looked for a fresh and Burgundian character in his wines and in Ribeira Sacra, he found the perfect place to make this wine.
Ladredo is an estate situated in the canyon of the river Sil, on a steep terraced slope with slate soil. The plot is planted with the Mencía, Garnacha Tintorera and Alicante Bouschet varieties.
Regarding the production of the wine, fermentation is carried out in open barrels with 40% of the stem. After finishing fermentation, it is decanted into old barrels where it spends 13 months ageing.
Ladredo is one of Ribeira Sacra’s best wines, where you can discover the area’s Atlantic profile.
SightPicota red.NoseThis wine shows characteristics of the Mencía grape variety, with spices, black pepper, cinnamon and ripe red fruit aromas. It is fresh and elegant with great aromatic complexity, sowing mineral notes from shale in the region.TasteElegant on the palate with soft tannins, and fruity and spiced notes that are well integrated with the minimalist character of the wine. An acidic and persistent finish. Great ageing potential.
Ribeira Sacra is one of those magical places that you just have to visit to truly experience it. The vertiginous terraces rise steep on the banks of the river Sil, making the terrain difficult to work on that it requires complete manual work and labor on the vineyards. The agriculture carried out here is aptly referred to as ‘heroic agriculture’, due to the hard work carried out cultivating the land. Both red and white wines are produced in the Ribeira Sacra. The red wines are mostly made with the Mencía variety, defined by their expressive and elegant character with a good acidity. The Ribeira Sacra white wines are principally made with the Godello and Albariño varieties. They are wines with a good volume in the mouth, aromatic and fruity. The Ribeira Sacra wines are often come in very limited productions, are of high quality and with notable personalities.
This winery has belonged to the Van der Niepoort since 1848, when it was ceded by Eduard Krebe, who founded it six years earlier. Currently, the company is directed by Rolf van der Niepoort and his son, Dirk, the fifth generation. It is one of the most renowned Portuguese wine companies in the world, both for its quality —only 16 vintages classified as Vintage in 60 years— and for the great personality and inimitable style of its wines.
