Características de La Faraona
La Faraona is made of 100% Mencía, the icon of Bierzo. The subtleness of this wine will compensate the extremely low production of the most mysterious vine in this winery in 2012. After quite a controversial year in what climate is concerned, the region of Bierzo surprised us with admirably expressive wines, confirming the singular character of the wines from this peculiar winemaking region and of its typical variety, Mencía, which keeps surprising us. To the combination of soils, altitudes and exposure, in this vintage we can add the diversity in the ripenning of the bunches. A vintage that will provide structured wines with delicate aromatic nuances. Very rich and really elegant wines.
In recent years, winemakers and developers have settled in the DO Bierzo with very plausible innovative ideas, investing heavily in local wineries, resulting in the production of personal and unique wines. There is no doubt that El Bierzo has become a trendy and cool D.O, aided by the spicy, delicate and velvety Mencia grape, whose character and great capacity of expression of terroir is undoubtedly the regions best asset. Even many compare it to the Pinot Noir, which together with the small scale style of production and topography of its vineyards, the traditional form of the Burgundian bottle used, and the original use of the names of towns and places in their best wines, resulted in this wine region being given the nickname of "little Spanish burgundy".
To talk of Descendientes de J. Palacios is to talk about Ricardo Perez and his uncle Álvaro Palacios, both passionate about simplifying the treatment of the vineyards and the wine production process, leading them to become pioneers of Biodynamic viticulture. The winery currently boasts 30 hectares of vineyards spread over 200 different plots, home to old vines and steep soils, which combines the organic with the immaterial in the constant search for the definition and purity of their wines.

Rain was the determinant factor this winter, as it always is in Bercía. Regarding later winter months, more temperate and dry conditions were observed.

The delayed arrival of spring marked a turn of fortune for this Bercía wine. To make matters worse, hail storms did away with much of the harvest in areas such as the Muria in Viariz, San Martín and one of this area's most emblematic vineyards -- La Faraona.

All these factors severely delayed the harvest. The late appearance of vine blossoms was the clearest indication that 2013 would be a laborious, problematic and extraordinarily demanding year regarding follow-up work in the vineyard. It proved to be an authentic challenge.
Summer arrived with unexpected temperatures. The absence of the sunlight typical of July and August resulted in a slow and mediocre vegetative process.

Because of all these irregularities, the harvest was delayed by three weeks. It began on the 23rd of September with healthy and robust grapes, but the dreaded harvest rains started back up after ten days. Unfortunately, these rains are an old acquaintance, having frequently appeared since the early days of the Bierzo.

Keeping this in mind, the winemakers' luck lied in the fact that the areas hit hardest by the rain (up to 20 litres per day) also happened to be best adapted to it because of their altitude, soil, great drainage capabilities, limited yields, pH levels and ecological balance.

This vintage represents a return to the origins of the character that this area used to impose on its winemakers. It has yet again demonstrated the adaptability of its vineyards.
Bierzo-0001-11-30Non-certified biodynamic
