Characteristics of La Carenyeta de Cal Pla

La Carenyeta de Cal Pla is a red wine produced by Celler Cal Pla in the DO Priorat.

El Celler Cal Pla is a small family winery which has produced wines since 1814. The knowledge and passion put into practice since it was established has been passed down through the generations, the seventh currently runs the winery.

Celler Cal Pla is known for its red wine Mas d'en Compte, a wonderful wine with the character of Priorat, its 2009 vintage received 96 Parker points. La Carenyeta de Cal Pla is a single-variety Carignan, made with grapes from Finca Els Arbres, a farm with old vines between 70 and 80 years old with a very low yield, cultivated by hand and planted on hillsides with slate soils, known as 'licorella' in the Priorat.

La Carenyeta de Cal Pla spends 14 months aging in French oak barrels. A great wine from Priorat, expressive and with a strong mineral character. If you want to try this wine, do not delay. Only 1,000 bottles per vintage are produced.

Tasting notes La Carenyeta de Cal Pla

The vintage began in autumn in the best possible way, with good rainfalls that would fill the water reserves for optimal growth development. Winter was characterised by low temperatures and even snow covered some areas of Priorat. March started wet and cold, which delayed the budding of the vines. In mid-May, flowering was encouraged and was followed by a somewhat unstable June with several rainfalls.
A year with a very good balance. This vintage was characterised by the absence of water stress for the plants. Winter and spring were favourable in terms of rainfall and temperatures were slightly higher than usual. At the time of budding, there was no rain, so the vines developed in a suitable manner. The flowering took place in a clean way and the Grenache vines settled in an excellent way. Summer was characterised by cool and dry days, but also humid, which led to good photosynthesis and growth of the plants. During the end of the summer, before the harvest, there was still some humidity, which preserved the freshness of the soil and, consequently, achieving a gradual ripening of the grapes, perfect to retain the aromas and the good acidity. The negative factor was the rain during the harvest days. In short, the vintage has been somewhat atypical for Priorat, with wines that are less voluminous than in a normal year in the area, but with a good acidity that is reflected in the wines and that will keep them optimal for many years.
A year that started with some problems with the flowering but ended up being very good. Winter was colder and rainier than usual. Spring continued with days of low temperatures and a lot of water that delayed flowering and the consequent setting problems until the end of March, affected production. After a complicated year, when the summer began, the rains stopped and the temperatures rose, providing excellent ripening due to optimal rainfall during the year. The year has therefore been one of the best in recent years. Fluidity, acidity and concentration augur for a long life of the wines of this vintage.
Sight Cherry red with a garnet rim. Clean and bright, leaving a thin trail around the glass. Nose Very intense and rich aromas. Fleshy and ripe black fruit gives way to aromatic notes, cinnamon, liquorice, nutmeg, balsamic and herbs. Taste Good entrance which is ample and silky. Good acidity, sweet tannins. Very long and persistent finish that leaves mineral and perfumed flavours.

Nose This nose is full and rich in aromas of fleshy, ripe black fruit, which gives way to a series of spicy touches, cinnamon, liquorice, nutmeg, balsamic notes, aromatic herbs, smooth toasted and roasted notes and a mineral background.  Taste Decisive attack, warm, broad and silky on the palate, filling the mouth with appetising fruity sensations. Sweet, ripe tannins and a magnificent, very well integrated acidity that refreshes, defines and deepens the set. A very long and persistent finish leaves balsamic and mineral nuances. Very recommendable. Fantastic value for money.

Winery Cal Pla

Priorat is craftsmanship and tradition, old and robust vines that are grown and born deep inside the province of Tarragona. They are grown on slopes that are sleety with low fertility and difficult to grow in. In Priorat they produce great red wines of an excellent quality, a maroon colour, robust, dense and rich flavour, intense aromas and sometimes there are reflections present of minerals from the soils.
