Characteristics of Joseph Drouhin Vosne-Romanée
Joseph Drouhin Vosne-Romanée is a monovarietal Pinot Noir red wine from the AOC Vosne-Romanée produced by Joseph Drouhin.
Joseph Drouhin is a winery founded in the late nineteenth century and located in Beaune. It owns 78 hectares of vineyards in the various subareas of Burgundy: in Côte de Nuits, Chablis, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise. It also buys grapes and must from local producers. For years the winery has been practicing organic farming because it understands that listening and respecting its vineyards and nature is the right way to make great wines.
The vineyards for Joseph Drouhin Vosne-Romanée lie in the north of Nuits-Saint-Georges, a municipality in Burgundy which is also home to the mythical Romanée-Conti or Richebourg. The soils of the plots are of calcareous marls with an excellent drainage and an ideal exposure for cultivating Pinot Noir. The vineyards have a planting density of about 10,000 plants per hectare, are pruned in Guyot style and produce around 43 hl/ha.
Joseph Drouhin Vosne-Romanée is made by macerating with the skins and fermenting with native yeasts for about 2-3 weeks at a controlled temperature. Once fermented, the wine is aged in barrels, 20 % of which are new, for a period of 14 to 18 months.
Joseph Drouhin Vosne-Romanée is a very elegant wine with diverse aromas that is surprisingly wild but harmonious as a whole.
Joseph Drouhin Vosne-Romanée 2016 has aromas of cherry, nutmeg, camphor wood and fine leather, and as the wine opens up it acquires subtle aromas of truffles and spices. On the palate it reveals a balance between tannin and acidity, and displays a fleshy and resistant body. It is a powerful and lingering wine.
One of the most interesting French winemakers in Burgundy. They have been making wine since 1880 from the Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune and Côte Chalonnaise vineyards, as well as in the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
