This Riesling comes from the vineyards of Schoenenbourg, from a selection of the best plots of the Hugel & Fils family estate, in Riquewihr, Alsace, classified as Grossi Laüe, which in the Alsatian language refers to "the best vineyards".
Hugel & Fils is a century-old Alsatian winery with a worldwide reputation. Their wines are in practically all the great restaurants in France.
Alsace is a privileged enclave for cultivating the Riesling grape. It is the driest wine region in France, far from the marine influence, and protected by the Vosges, and has a microclimate that favours the ripening of the grapes, thus endowing the wine with unparalleled aromas and intensity.
Two hundred million years of geological history have endowed these Hugel & Fils plots with a particular terroir, with soils consisting of marl, a type of sedimentary rock, composed of calcites and clays, which gives the soil a characteristic whitish colour and endows the wines with minerality, delicacy and a high ageing capacity.
This Hugel Alsace Riesling Grossi Laüe is harvested manually at the optimum moment of ripeness of the grapes, which are transported to the winery in small containers to ensure the bunches remain intact. Subsequently, a gentle pressing is applied. This first must is fermented in hundred-year-old fudres at a controlled temperature. In winter the wine is naturally clarified, and filtered slightly in spring before being bottled.
Each step in producing Hugel Alsace Riesling Grossi Laüe is carried out meticulously, including a special stopper, the DIAM cork, which prevents the possibility of contamination.
The final result is a tribute to the patience invested in the process. Each bottle undergoes a period of rest in the cellar of up to five years, thus ensuring it comes onto the market at a suitable time for consuming.
Hugel Alsace Riesling Grossi Laüe is a very gastronomic wine, with energy and character, and one which will gain in complexity after 8 to 12 more years in the bottle. It is the ideal companion for haute cuisine.
Hugel Alsace Riesling Grossi Laüe has all the charm of a good Riesling. It is a tempting wine for the most curious, but by leaving it to rest in the bottle for a while, the most patient will be able to enjoy to the full all the typical qualities that only the noblest vineyards in Alsace can offer.
