Characteristics of Hugel Alsace Riesling Classic

Hugel Alsace Riesling Classic is the flagship wine of the Hugel & Fils winery. A monovarietal Riesling dry white wine made in the Alsace region of France.

In the winery Hugel & Fils describe the Riesling grape as the Pinot Noir of white wines. It is the most demanding of the varieties they harvest, the last to ripen and the one that best expresses its varietal characteristics cultivated on the estate’s steepest slopes and with the most complex minerality.

Hugel & Fils is an Alsatian winery founded in the 15th century. It belongs to The Henokiens, an international association of family businesses that are more than two hundred years old. Despite its modest size, Hugel & Fils is recognised all over the world. It exports 80% of its production to over 100 countries, and its wines are in practically all the great restaurants in France.

Alsace is a privileged enclave for cultivating Riesling. It is the driest wine region in France, far from the marine influence, and protected by the Vosges, and has a microclimate that favours the ripening of the grapes, thus endowing the wine with unparalleled aromas and intensity.

To produce Hugel Alsace Riesling Classic, the same procedure is used as for vinifying the rest of the estate’s whites. The harvest is carried out manually. The bunches are transported in small containers to the presses, which are filled by gravity, without any mechanical intervention. The must is fermented in vats with controlled temperatures and is clarified naturally with the cold of winter. The wine is lightly filtered just before bottling in the spring, and as usual in the winery, all the bottles are sealed using a DIAM, a special cork that prevents the spread of TCA, known as "cork disease".

Hugel Alsace Riesling Classic is, without a doubt, an ideal wine to drink now, and with a little patience will reveal qualities full of pleasant surprises. An exponent of the most delicate and frank Riesling in Alsace.

Tasting notes Hugel Alsace Riesling Classic

Hugel Alsace Riesling Classic 2016 is a dry white wine, with notes of fresh fruit, such as pears or kiwi, and a mineral nuance. It also has aromas of clementines that are transformed on the palate into aromatic tangerines. It has the acidity and juiciness of ripe citrus fruit, with a pleasant sensation of tension and liveliness that, despite its youth and light body, fills the mouth. The finish is dry, clean and fresh with a tropical echo.
