Characteristics of Horizonte de Exopto

Horizonte de Exopto is a red wine from the D.O. La Rioja produced by the Exopto winery. This wine is a blend of three different grape varieties; Tempranillo (80%), Graciano (10%) and Garnacha (10%).

The grapes used come from different zones. The Garnacha grapes come from Monte Yerga, at altitudes around 1,100 metres, while the Tempranillo and Graciano grapes come from Ábalos, on the left banks of the river Ebro. The vineyards are old, between 50 and 80 years old. The soil varieties also vary, while the Garnacha and Graciano varieties grow on sandy soils with boulders, the Tempranillo variety grows on calcareous-clay soils.

After having been selected with care, the harvest is carried out manually and the grapes are transported to the winery in small 12kg capacity boxes. The vinification process begins with fermentation, which is carried out at temperatures between 25º and 28ºC in oak vats and concrete tanks for one week. Maceration then takes place for three weeks, followed by the final process of ageing.

Horizonte de Exopto ages for one year in French oak barrels, 20% of which are first use.

Exopto actually derives from latin and means to “desire with great strength”. This could not be more apt for the sensation you feel when you try wines by this winery for the first time. These are wines from La Rioja which deviate from the norm and show a strong personality.

Tasting notes Horizonte de Exopto

This vintage, rated as "Very Good", was characterized by the hard frost that occurred when the vegetative cycle was beginning in mid-April, and by the subsequent drought. Except for these two weather events, the year passed normally, with the vintage displaying a perfect health status in the last phase of the cycle. The wines of this vintage are characterized by having a somewhat higher average graduation than 2016, with a very good aging capacity and a high percentage of fine and very identifiable wines.
High summer temperatures define this vintage. After a mild winter with very little rainfall, spring began with a great deal of rain, which provided favourable conditions for the growth cycle of the vines. During the summer, they experienced very high temperatures and the absence of rain, which resulted in very healthy vines. As a general result, this was a balanced year, where the final absence of rains led to a good concentration of grapes. This year is noted for a vintage with volume that can be enjoyed as a young wine.
After a winter with normal temperatures and rainfall for D.O.Ca Rioja, high temperatures in spring and summer market his year, as well as the absence of rain at the most dangerous times for the vineyard. These factors led to very healthy vines, but the harvest was brought forward three weeks on average. As a result, this year was rated as a very good one in the area, with the only drawback of not reaching full ripeness. Therefore, the wines from this vintage are those typical from Rioja, with a slightly higher alcoholic strength and a good balance between acidity and ripening.
It was a fairly balanced year until the harvest season arrived. The beginning of the cycle, in October, started with high temperatures, and it was not until mid-November that the first frosts began and the leaves of the vines began to fall to prepare for winter. Throughout the winter, rainfall was generous and water reserves could be secured for the growth cycle period. During the months of March and April, there was an increase in temperatures that led to the good sprouting of the plant. The growth cycle of the vines was suitable, and the sudden rise of temperatures resulted in quite a fast blooming. There was an optimal growth of the fruit, until the harvest season, when rains damaged the state of the grapes and caused a drop in production. This is a good vintage, but the last rains damaged the final result. The wines are good and can be drunk in the short- and mid-term, they have a medium body and material.
Sight Cherry red colour with ruby rims. High robe, clean and bright. Nose Medium intense nose. Becomes more complex and expressive once aired. Aromas of red and black fruit, raspberries and blackberries which combine perfectly with the very fine toasted notes from its ageing in the barrel. Spicy notes, lactic touches and balsamic and smoky nuances gradually appear. Taste Wide, bulky attack. Very fruity, good acidity and polished, elegant tannins. Good finish, with a long, mineral aftertaste. Balanced.

Sight Intense and deep ruby red colour with maroon edges. Clean and bright wine with a high robe. Nose It is initially very powerful and intense but, as it opens up, the wine becomes more complex. Aromas of red and black fruits, raspberries and blackberries are perfectly assembled and aligned with very fine and elegant toasted aromas provided by the oak. Hints of spices are also noticed along with milky, balsamic and smoked nuances. Seductively complex set with plenty of nuances to discover. Taste After a very good attack, wide and juicy, with a significant load of fruits, a very nice mid palate is displayed with a good acidity and very polished, elegant and silky tannins. Good mineral finish with a long aftertaste. A balanced Rioja wine.
Sight Intense purple colour with violet trims. Clean and bright. Nose Impressive amount of aromas that ranges from roasted and smoked to ripe fruit, mostly black with a touch of liquor, and different spices that emerge very subtly. Its intensity increases as it opens up. Taste Very tasty Rioja wine, full of ripe black fruit accompanied with well integrated notes of oak. Some spicy touches. Ripe tannins and a long lingering finish.
