Characteristics of Hombros

Hombros is a red wine from Bierzo prepared by Casar de Burbia. It is a single variety of Mencia. Hombros is made from grapes from old vines between 50 and 100 years old, from selected plots on the 27 acres of property owned by the winery.

Most of these are located on slopes at a minimum altitude of 600 metres. The terroir contains slate, clay, aluminium and iron, typical elements of the area.

The vines are enhanced by pruning the grapes that are on top, which are called "Hombros." Hence the name of the wine.

Hombros grapes are harvested manually and then pass through a press that follows the traditional artisanal methods.

Hombros also undergoes a controlled fermentation at high temperatures of about 25° in deposits with 10,000 litres of capacity.

Finally, Hombros spends a minimum of 12 months in French Allier oak barrels and American oak barrels.

Casar de Burbia is a family project started in the 80s by Nemesio Fernandez, who then acquired virtually abandoned old vineyards.

The family has lovingly worked the land to recover it and produces great wines today. Today it is managed by the second generation who are in charge of the project.

Tasting notes Hombros

The 2013 vintage was characterised by the influence of the Atlantic climate. Autumn and winter were the typical ones of El Bierzo, with abundant rainfall and low temperatures. Spring came in the same way, with some hail that destroyed crops in some places and lead to the delay in flowering. Summer did not make much of an appearance either, with low temperatures, ripening and the growth cycle were quite slow. The harvest date was delayed by 3 weeks.The wines of this vintage are characterised by a thin profile. The Atlantic climate left its mark on these lighter wines with a marked acidity. Ready to be stored.
Sight Cherry high layer. It is intense and neat. Pretty tear. Nose High intensity. Fruity and toasted notes. Spicy, mineral and balsamic. Taste Powerful, bulky entry. Fleshy and tasty. Elegant tannins and long and balanced finish.
Sight Picota cherry colour. Intense, clean and bright. High robe, with pretty tears staining the glass. Nose Clean nose, high intensity. Aromas of ripe red and black fruit are accompanied by toasted notes and sweet spices gradually giving way to mineral touches, refreshing balsamic notes and earthy nuances. Taste This red wine shows bulky and powerful attack. It is tasty and fleshy with a good concentration of ripe fruit. Elegant and ripe tannins. Long and balanced on the palate, with a long and persistent finish.
Sight Lively and bright purple, high robe and slightly tinted legs. Nose Aromatically, a good charge of ripe fruit is noticed accompanied with notes of minerals, typical hints provided by the ageing (vanilla, chocolate, snuff) with a balsamic (eucalyptus) touch that provides freshness. Taste Large and tasty attack. Good concentration of ripe fruit. Elegant, ripe tannins. Silky mid palate. Balanced and powerful. Lingering finish. Pure expression of the Mencia variety.

Winery Casar de Burbia

Bierzo wine is on the rise. It is a region defined by its small scale work, with plots scattered around, very old vines, artisan work of the small scale wineries, and the character of their principal variety, the Mencía grape, which produces fresh, fruity and delicious wines. Although the region is well known mostly for its red wines, it also produces white and rosé wines. If the red wines here are defined by the Mencía variety, then the white wines here are defined by the Godello. Godello grape has great aromatic potential, as well as an excellent balance between alcohol and acidity.  Despite the great potential of El Bierzo, its rise in the wine world would not have been possible without two people: Raúl Pérez and Ricardo Pérez. Two great winemakers who in little time have been able to produce critically acclaimed wines from the Bierzo region.
