Characteristics of Hacienda Monasterio Reserva

Hacienda Monasterio Reserva is a red wine from D.O. Ribera del Duero produced by Bodegas Hacienda Monasterio, one of the great wineries that we will encounter in the Ribera del Duero.
Peter Sisseck is the maker of the some of the most well know Spanish wines in Spain like Pingus, and Carlos de la Fuente, has the grapes extracted with all their potential and continues with great wines that reflect and express the quality of the land where they are created.
Bodegas Hacienda Monasterio follows an organic farming process which is completely respectful of the environment. They do not use any type of pesticide or herbicide. For fertilizers, they use the composted remains of the vineyard together with sheep excrement.
Hacienda Monasterio Reserva is a coupage of Tinto fino (80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%). The grapes are grown on a south facing estate and with mainly limestone soils which causes the wine to be fine and elegant.
The harvest is done by hand and the grapes are transported to the winery in small plastic creates which prevents breakages before they arrive at the winery so that they are all still intact. After destemming, the grapes undergo a meticulous selection process.
The fermentation is only performed with natural yeast. The malolactic fermentation takes places in French Allier oak barrels, applying a racking every 3 months, a process that helps separate the grapes from their lees.
Hacienda Monasterio Reserva undergoes an aging for 18 months in French Allier oak barrels before resting in the bottle for at least 12 months before they are released onto the market.
A complex and very expressive red wine from Ribera del Duero and the Tinto Fino variety.

Tasting notes Hacienda Monasterio Reserva

The 2015 vintage started with a winter that had good groundwater reserves. The spring was warm and dry until well into the month of June, when there were intense rainfall at the beginning of the blooming. A summer with some well spread out storms gave way to a very dry autumn. The harvest was slightly ahead of the usual dates, but the analytical and organoleptic features, and the balance of the berries, were ideal. Thus enabled the harvest to take place at the optimal ripening time. The wines from this vintage, which was classified as excellent, have a good colour intensity, significant fruity notes on the nose and a high tannic potential in the mouth, with sweet tannins that indicate the good phenolic ripening of the berries. A vintage reminiscent of the exceptional 2005 vintage.
After the withering in a mild winter, the warm start of spring brought sprouting forward by almost 10 days. The summer, which was quite cool and dry, enabled the good evolution of the growth cycle and a balanced ripening. This was a vintage without setbacks. Worth mentioning is the high production of this vintage due to good climatic behaviour during the harvest. The wines from this vintage have great colour intensity, and a high fruity expression on the nose and in the mouth. Their balance and tannic potential stand out; these features show us the great potential to produce great wines for ageing, and for lighter and fruitier productions.
This was a complicated year. Although the sprouting of the vines was slightly early, the low temperatures recorded during the spring delayed the growth cycle, which no longer recovered in the summer, despite having a warm month of July. The harvest was carried out at a fast pace, and with the extra effort of the viticulturers, who discarded the fruit that did not meet the optimal conditions. This way, they made sure that they avoided the probable effect of the botrytis attacks due to the rains they had around this time. The wines from this vintage, rated as a good one, offer good colour intensity, great fruit expression and a lot of freshness.
Regarding climate, the 2012 vintage started with the sprouting of the vines in the beginning of spring with the cooler temperatures. In May, generous rainfall and high temperatures gave way to a generalised drought throughout the summer. Luckily, the rains started at the onset of the ripening. The precipitations at the beginning of October, and the nice temperatures during the harvest, resulted in the a uniform phenolic ripening. The wines from this vintage have a good alcoholic strength, balanced by moderate levels of acidity, with a good colour and phenolic intensity, and a suitable level of tannins, all important features for a perfect ageing.
After a predictable winter, the weather changed in spring. Temperatures were higher than normal, which caused an early start of the grapes’ ripening cycle. The normal course of the climate at the end of spring and at the beginning of the summer, allowed the vines to recover their usual pace, and the veraison took place on the expected dates. The beginning of the harvest was slightly early due to the strong heat the grapes suffered during their ripening. However, the nice weather throughout the harvest, without rain or frost, provided grapes with an impeccable health. Wines from the 2011 vintage have a slightly higher alcohol strength than usual, with a perfect balance thanks to their natural acidity, concentration of colour and phenolic richness. For all these reasons, this vintage has been classified as excellent, offering high-quality young wines, and wines with the ideal features for their ageing.
Sight Intense and bright picota cherry colour. Nose Medium intensity on the nose. With a lot of red fruit, toasted and certain mineral notes. Balsamic and menthol combined with hints of aging in the barrel. Taste The attack is strong but easy. Intense and clear. A lot of ripe fruit is present. Young but polished tannins with wood notes from the aging that are well integrated.
Sight Intense picota cherry colour with bright ruby edges. High robe, clean and bright. Nose This vintage has a very floral nose with notes of rose petals oozing over ripe red and black fruit, deeply mineral notes and delicate menthol notes. Taste This red wine shows good, decisive and elegant attack. Full-bodied, with mineral notes standing out, uniting in perfect harmony with silky and structured tannins. A persistent aftertaste with light notes of cinnamon.
Sight The tasting repport of this wine is being translated. Meanwhile, you can check the Spanish version.
Sight Intense, shiny, almost black, with blue borders are very young. Nose The nose shows spice and mineral with hints of roasted due to childrearing. Taste It's powerful and silky in the mouth with an entry in this tannic that promises a great future ahead. The maturity of the tannins, acidity, alcohol and fruit make a package that provides a balance to the wine, to endure many years in bottle.
