Characteristics of Guímaro Finca Pombeiras
Guímaro Finca Pombeiras is a red wine made in Ribeira Sacra by the Guímaro Winery, a family winery which yields a small production of wonderful wines.
Guímaro Finca Pombeiras is a blend with the Mencia variety with other varieties such as Grenache, Caiño and Sousón. The grapes come from Finca Pombeiras, an estate with 70 year-old vineyards planted in slate soils in terraces on steep slopes with a 50% incline. Guímaro winery practices an organic agriculture that respects the environment. Harvesting is done manually and winemaking is done in the traditional manner, such as trampling the grapes under foot. Fermentation is carried out for 50 days in wooden cones using yeasts from the vineyards. After a light pressing by hand, the wine ages for 12-14 months in French oak barrels of 225 litres. Before bottling, Guímaro Finca Pombeiras is decanted naturally in the warehouse. Guímaro Finca Pombeiras is the brother of Penance, which is produced by Raúl Pérez, the famous wine winemaker, using the grapes and facilities of this winery. Only 500 bottles of Guímaro Finca Pombeiras are produced- so if you want to be one of the lucky few to try it, hurry up!
The DO Ribeira Sacra is a region that perhaps paints one of the best pictures of heroic viticulture, having even been awarded recognition by CERVIM, the awarding body for this style of viticulture. The term ‘heroic viticulture’ refers to viticulture in areas that have a topography and soil conditions that complicate the work in the vineyards and make cultivating the vines and harvest a challenge. The region is home to an Atlantic climate, rivers as thermoregulatory agents, low rainfall, slate-schistose and granite soils, small sized plots and vineyards grown on steep slopes. The result is excellent wines with great personalities that truly express the dramatic and exciting nature of the landscape.
