Characteristics of Guímaro Finca Capeliños
Guímaro Finca Capeliños is a red wine produced by Bodega Guímaro in D.O. Ribeira Sacra. It is a small family winery with a low production yield, but produces wines of excellent quality.
Guímaro Finca Capeliños is a blend of the Mencía variety (85%) with Caiño, Sousón, Garnacha and Brancellao. The grapes come from the Capeliños estate with almost 100 year old vineyards, planted in terraces on slopes with a steep 50% incline on granite and slate soils.
Bodega Guímaro practices organic farming which is respectful of the land. The harvest is done manually and the grapes are trodden in a traditional manner. Fermentation is carried out in a wooden cone with local yeasts from the vineyard itself over a period of 50 days. After fermentation, there is a light manual pressing, before ageing, which takes place over 12-14 months in 225 litre French oak barrels. Once the wine has finished ageing, Guímaro Finca Capeliños is transferred to a warehouse where it is allowed to naturally settle before bottling.
Finca Guímaro Capeliños is a wonderful Mencía. It is the "brother" wine of El Pecado, which the renowned winemaker Raúl Perez made using the facilities and grapes of Bodega Guímaro. In total 6-8 barrels are produced from the two vines.
Ribeira Sacra is one of those magical places that you just have to visit to truly experience it. The vertiginous terraces rise steep on the banks of the river Sil, making the terrain difficult to work on that it requires complete manual work and labor on the vineyards. The agriculture carried out here is aptly referred to as ‘heroic agriculture’, due to the hard work carried out cultivating the land. Both red and white wines are produced in the Ribeira Sacra. The red wines are mostly made with the Mencía variety, defined by their expressive and elegant character with a good acidity. The Ribeira Sacra white wines are principally made with the Godello and Albariño varieties. They are wines with a good volume in the mouth, aromatic and fruity. The Ribeira Sacra wines are often come in very limited productions, are of high quality and with notable personalities.

To the heroic character of Guímaro, we must add the familiar and traditional dedication that the human team has with nature, to achieve wines that are honest with the terroir where they are born. Adegas Guímaro is among the 100 Best Wineries of the World 2015, according to the ranking made each year by Wine & Spirits magazine for the Top 100 Tasting Event awards. Its red wines Finca Pombeiras and Finca Capeliños, both with 96 points, are also at the top of the Galician ranking in the Robert Parker newsletter of 2015.
