Characteristics of Gran Callejo

Félix Callejo is one of the Ribera del Duero wineries that best expresses the Tinta Fina (Tempranillo) variety and the terroir from where it comes.
Gran Callejo is a Tempranillo single-varietal. After the manual harvest and two selection processes the grapes ferment with their natural yeasts, at a low temperature at first and then rising to finish at 30ºC. The malolactic fermentation takes place in 1 year old French oak barrels and the wine then ages for 24 months in new French oak barrels. It then rests in the bottle in the winery for 5 months before going on sale.
Serve at 17.0ºC
Contains sulphites
We recommend decanting before consumption

Tasting notes Gran Callejo

This was a complicated year. Although the sprouting of the vines was slightly early, the low temperatures recorded during the spring delayed the growth cycle, which no longer recovered in the summer, despite having a warm month of July. The harvest was carried out at a fast pace, and with the extra effort of the viticulturers, who discarded the fruit that did not meet the optimal conditions. This way, they made sure that they avoided the probable effect of the botrytis attacks due to the rains they had around this time. The wines from this vintage, rated as a good one, offer good colour intensity, great fruit expression and a lot of freshness.
Regarding climate, the 2012 vintage started with the sprouting of the vines in the beginning of spring with the cooler temperatures. In May, generous rainfall and high temperatures gave way to a generalised drought throughout the summer. Luckily, the rains started at the onset of the ripening. The precipitations at the beginning of October, and the nice temperatures during the harvest, resulted in the a uniform phenolic ripening. The wines from this vintage have a good alcoholic strength, balanced by moderate levels of acidity, with a good colour and phenolic intensity, and a suitable level of tannins, all important features for a perfect ageing.
The 2009 vintage started with a winter of low temperatures, which gave way to a cool spring. A dry summer, with warm days and mild nights, and great temperature changes between day and night, led to very balanced, complex and concentrated grapes. As for climate, it was the perfect vintage. This influenced the health of the grapes, which was excellent. Therefore, the wines from this vintage have a good acidity, which is responsible for long-lived wines with a good structure. And generally, responsible for very fruity wines with fresh red fruit that stands out. One of the great vintages of this region.
Sight Picota cherry colour with a maroon rim and violet reflections. Intense, clean and bright. Fine, pretty, lightly tinted tears show on the glass. Nose Intense, clean nose full of nuances. Ripe red and black fruit appear at first and gradually give way to aromas of spices, vanilla, cocoa, patisserie, with some lactic and toasted notes. Balsamic notes in the background. Worth pondering for a good while. Taste On the palate this wine is rich, fleshy, long and well-structured. It has lots of body, a magnificent acidity and some essential, sweet and ripe tannins. Very long and persistent. At retro-olfaction intense toasted notes and spices are felt.
Sight Picota cherry colour with a maroon rim and violet reflections. Intense, clean and bright, with fine, slightly tinted tears on the glass. Nose Intense and clean nose, full of nuances. Ripe red and black fruit appears at first and gradually gives way to spicy aromas of vanilla, cocoa, milky touches, patisserie goods, toasted notes and a a balsamic background... we recommend dedicating a good deal of time to this wonderful nose. Taste Unctuous and long in the mouth, well-structured and full-bodied, with a magnificent acidity and direct, sweet, ripe tannins. Very long and persistent. Toasted and spicy notes are felt at retro-olfaction.
