History of the winery
The history of the Torres family has been linked to the world of wine since the beginning of nineteenth century. At the time they already cultivated vineyards and produced wine that was sold in bulk, transported in wooden barrels on a horse drawn cart.
Bodegas Torres was founded in 1870 by Jaime Torres Vendrell. On his return from Cuba, where he managed to make a fortune thanks to the oil business and maritime trade, partnered with his brother Miguel, a wine cultivator, and founded the company Villafranca del Penedés, a town near Barcelona.
During the Spanish Civil War the winery was bombed, leaving it in ruins. Miguel Torres Carbó, the third generation of the viticulture family, was commissioned to rebuild the winery in 1940. He also made a quantum leap by selling and marketing wine in bulk in bottles and with labels. At the time many legendary brands were born, which are still on the market today. In 1946 they sold the first brandy: Torres 10. In 1954, the first Sangre de Toro which became a best seller.
At the end of the 60s, Bodegas Torres imported and planted various foreign grape vines like Cabernet Sauvignon or Chardonnay.
They introduced various changes to the production of the wines like using stainless steel tanks and beginning an ecological viticulture.
Then in the 80s, they improved the fermentation process and began to use fermentation at a controlled temperature, the performace of the vines per hector was reduced and they search for a higher quality in their wines.
At the end of the 80s, Bodegas Torres began to expand by acquiring vine yards in Calafornia and Chile, corverting it into an internationally prestigious brand, which led them to sell their products in more than 140 countries worldwide.
In 2000, Bodegas Torres constructed new wineries in Ribera del Duero and Rioja, where they began to produce wines of various types from the area.
Philosophy of their work
Currently, Bodegas Torres has four wineries in different Denominations of Origin: D.O. Penedès, D.O. Priorat, D.O Ribera del Duero and D.O. Rioja, where they have planted 20 different varities of grape, both red and white.
The well-known varieties are Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Garnacha, Syrah, Albariño, Chardonnay or Rieslingm and the lesser known varieties are Samsó and Garró, which are exclusive varieties to the area of Catalonia.
This allows the winery to have a huge range of different wines, represented by various areas of production in Spain, featuring different grape varieties, soil types, climates and altitudes.
In its wide range of products, Torres produces many red, white and rosé wines which are as well know as its brandies.
