Founded in 1924, Ramón Bilbao winery has more than 75 hectares of vineyards that are situated in Haro, La Rioja. Experts in the art of aging, this winery combines history and Riojan tradition with the modernity of its new facilities.
HISTORY OF THE WINERY The winery Ramón Bilbao was founded in 1924; however, around 1896 Don Ramón Bilbao Murga had already sold their wines to a winery that was located on a street in Las Cuevas, Haro.
In 1972, a few years after the death of the last descents of the Bilbao family, the winery was placed in the hands of the Lecanda family, founders of the legendary Vega Sicilia winery in Ribera del Duero, where they built new facilities, and thereby expanded their brand and focused on the production of crianza wines. In 1999 when the company Diego Zamora S.A., one of the most important groups of drinks in Spain, acquired Bodegas Ramón Bilbao, they began a process of modernisation and upgrading the facilities, which marked a new step and a big boost to the brand, achieving great recognition from the customers. Currently, Bodegas Ramón Bilbao continue developing innovative high quality wines but they also represent the purist tradition in La Rioja. The combination of history and modernity are all hallmarks of this iconic winery in Rioja, experts in crianza wines thanks to the use of grapes from the best farms and vineyards, barrels that are made from the finest oak in European and American forests as well as a great team of professionals that are responsible for making the wine.
PILOSOPHY OF THEIR WORK Since 1972, the Bodegas Ramón Bilbao facilities have been situated on a plot outside Haro with more than 7000 square meters of surrounding vineyards.
This winery is situated on a spectacular estate for growing grapes in Haro, a town where Rioja Alta is one of the highest concentrations of wineries in the world, and where they grow the typical variety of grape for Riojan wines: Tempranillo. Located close to the River Ebro, the lands of the winery possess magnificent conditions for growing vines, since they are formed by heterogeneous soils, shallow and well drained with a deficit of water at key moments. At Bodegas Ramón Bilbao they have a significant production of vineyards, specifically 75 hectares, located in Haro, Briones, Abalos, Villalba, San Vicente de Sonsierra, Cihuri, Anguciana and Cuzcurrrita del Río Tirón, the vineyards are controlled by several farmers in the area who have collaborated with the winery for many years.
WINES FROM BODEGA RAMÓN BILBAO At Bodegas Ramón Bilbao they may claim that they make great reds from Rioja, however never forget the white and pink wine.
