Without a doubt, Gramona III Lustros Gran Reserva Brut Nature is one of the best cavas that can be found on the market today. It is a blend of 70% Xarel.lo, capable of long periods of ageing (it spends 5 or 6 months in the silence of the winery), it has body, freshness and character, and 30% Macabeo, which brings aromatic and structural capacity.
History of the winery
Gramona has a long family history, a history that begins with the union of two families. The Batlle family and the Gramona family. These two families were linked forever to the world of wine and cava in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, a town in the province of Barcelona known as the capital of cava, as it is the largest producer of cava in the country.
The Batlle were a family of winemakers and viticulturists that, since 1816m, sold wine in the Gramona headquarters on Montserrat street of Sant Sadurní. Since the mid-nineteenth century Josep Batlle worked at Finca La Plana as a sharecropper, using the land in exchange for a share in the profits. Finca la Plana was one of the most ancient Xarel·lo vineyards of Sant Sadurní, and a few years later passed into the hands of the Batlle family. In 1881 Pau Batlle, Josep's son, built a facility for winemaking at the back of the house. Thus was born Celler Batlle, a winery that continued to operate uninterruptedly until the 2001.
This was a time of great demand for French wines, which was then immersed in the great crisis of phylloxera, as a result, Josep Batlle became one of the most influential merchants from the Penedes. The Gramona family, meanwhile, were a family of winemakers and bartenders from Penedes. The eldest brother inherited the land and Josep, the youngest, decided to try his luck in Barcelona where he bought various taverns in the city centre in the late nineteenth century. He became President of the Guild of Taverns of Barcelona and was the founder of the newspaper "La Vid Catalana", a newspaper that eventually became the official publication of the Catalan Association of Winemakers in the 20s.
Josep Gramona and his wife had a son, Bartolomeu, who in 1910 undertook the first available oenology course, sharing the course with illustrious names such as Juvé, Mascaro, Ferrer (Freixenet) ... In 1913 the union of these two families occurred with the wedding of Bartolomeu Gramona and Pilar Batlle, daughter of Josep Batlle. The married couple began to develop cava in the Celler Batlle, with grapes coming from Finca La Plana and various farms that both families owned. The cava is brought to market in 1921 under names such as "Victoria", "Clos du Marquis "or" Gramon ". It would be a few years later, well into the 40s, when they started to use the brand for its Gramona cavas.
Later generations would be responsible for strengthening the brand and continuing the style marked by Bartolome, with a long aging process, as in the Imperial Gramona, and creating new cavas such as Lustros III which would soon become essential references for cava lovers. The 2001, a new Celler Batlle is built. A futuristic building buried under the mountain with all the comfort and functionality of a modern building, giving rest to the former illustrious Celler Batlle after 120 years of service. Currently, Gramona remains a family business with over 50 employees and a wide range of wines.
Philosophy of work
Gramona stands out with regards to quality. The highest quality is a requirement for all its wines. And palpable demand in all processes, from the vineyard to the wine. Gramona has about 150 acres, all owned, spread over four farms: La Plana, Mas Escorpí, The Serraste and La Solana, where they grow up to 15 different grape varieties. The winery practices environmentally friendly farming, promoting ecosystem diversity and respecting the flora and fauna, without using herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
Work in the vineyard is done manually, but with the help of new technologies such as weather stations and tasting nuggets to help determine the optimum ripeness of the grapes. The new winery, the Celler Batlle built in 2001, is literally buried beneath the La Plana. A modern building with minimal environmental impact thanks to its orientation and ventilation which allows a naturally controlled temperature between 14 and 16ºC. The roof is planted with vineyards and gardens that help maintain this temperature, they are watered with collected rain water.
The winery is fully prepared to accept grapes by gravity and has some innovative drive systems. The grapes fall into a tank, located on the mezzanine. After pressing the grapes, the wine falls into reservoirs located just below the presses. Celler Batlle has two aging cellars with capacity to accommodate 3 million bottles, plus a barrel aging room.
Wines produced by Gramona
If we talk about Gramona, we must talk about sparkling wines. This cellar has become a world reference. Grapes of excellent quality, selection manually and aged in natural cork.
Gramona Imperial is one of the key wines of the winery. A fine sparkling wine, aged for between 3 and 4 years.
Gramona III Lustros Gran Reserva is aged for more than 5 years with its residue.
Gramona Celler Batlle, another sparkling wine has over 8 years aging on the lees, with grapes from Finca La Plana, one of the oldest farms in the area.
But the development of Gramona is not just through sparkling wine. We also emphasize two great white wines: Gramona Mas Escorpí and Ovum. The first is a Chardonnay varietal, the second a Xarel·lo.
And finally, a dessert wine: the wonderful Gramona Gra a Gra is a varietal Pinot Noir that will delight lovers of sweet wines.
