The winery G.H.MUMM was founded in 1827. During the first years of the 19th century, the three sons of Peter Arnold Mumm, Gottlieb, Jacobus and Philipp, recognised the trade potential of the sparkling wines produced in the French region of Champagne. From the beginning, for the associates of the new entity founded in 1827, quality was their slogan, and it is currently kept the same. This principle would be reflected in Georges Hermann Mumm's motto: "Only the best".
The vineyards of the winery G.H.MUMM are spread over 218 hectares. In these vineyards, the main grape is Pinot Noir, particularly in the Reims Mountain, although "Grand Crus" made of Chardonnay can also be found in Cramant and Avize, in Côte des Blancs and in Val-de-Marne, in which Pinot Meunier is the predominant grape variety.
Soon, the winery G.H.MUMM understood the importance of establishing a system that ensured the quality of the grape juice, supervising every stage of the production, from the vine growing to the crucial pressing process. The winery showed its capacity for innovation as well as its firm engagement with the "terroir" — which has not weakened at any point throughout the centuries. They placed wine presses directly on the vineyards, an innovation that symbolised the engagement with the quality, which is still present nowadays. Thus, in 1840, when the company acquired its first plots located in Verzenay, the press, which is still currently used, was build and installed at the same time.
