Gerovassiliou Avaton is a red wine coupage of the Limnio, Mavroudi and Mavrotragano varieties produced by the Ktima Gerovassiliou winery in the I.G.P. Epanomi in Thessaly, Greece.
The clusters used to make the Gerovassiliou Avaton wine undergo alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in special Burgundy oak tanks and then age in French oak barrels. The Limnio grape, which is one of the three varieties that make up the coupage, is actually the oldest referenced Greek grape variety, having been mentioned by playwright Aristophanes in the 5th century BC.
The Ktima Gerovassiliou winery is located in Epanomi, which is 25 km southeast of Thessaloniki. They have 72 hectares of vineyards growing native and foreign varieties in a Mediterranean climate. The soils are sandy with some clay substrates and calcareous rocks. There have even been marine fossils discovered here.
Gerovassiliou Avaton is an authentic, balanced and characterful wine that is a great introduction to the immense wealth that can be found in the varietal wines of Greece.
