Characteristics of Gago

Gago is a red wine produced by the Telmo Rodriguez winery in Toro. Telmo Rodriguez is a wine company that produces wines of different Spanish origins (Malaga, Alicante, Rioja, Rueda ...). In all areas where the winery produces wines, they always try to use local varieties.

Gago is a varietal Tinta de Toro from old vines over 40 years old located in the town of Zamora. The vineyards are grown on slopes facing east, at an altitude of 650m on well-drained soils of varying texture and deep gravel.

Its development begins with a manual harvest and transportation of grapes in boxes. In the cellar, the wine is fermented with indigenous yeasts at a temperature of 28 ° C in closed stainless steel tanks. Maceration with skins is performed for 20 days.

After the fermentation process, Gago spends 14 months in foudres of 1500 litres and 225 litre barrels.

Before bottling, this wine is not filtered or clarified.

Tasting notes Gago

This year, which was described as a very good one, started with high temperatures that did not lower until the end of November. There were also quite low water reserves. In the early spring, temperatures began to rise, leading to the first bleedings of the vines. The beginning of the growth cycle did not present any major upheavals, except for the low humidity due to the lack of rain during the winter. During May, the vines began to develop their buds, causing the flowering during the first week of June. When they started to ripen, the drought and the stress on the vines was evident. At the end of August, there a certain amount of rain helped to hydrate the bunches, which helped to collect the healthiest grapes. As a result, we have a year with wines of a concentrated profile and some acidity. Perfect in their youth and with a medium ageing capacity.
The vintage began with a rainy autumn and low temperatures that produced frost for days in a row in December. At the beginning of March, temperatures began to recover and at the beginning of April, the start of the growth cycle was already visible. Due to the persistence of high temperatures, the growth of the vines took place faster, bringing forward the flowering. In June, temperatures dropped but in July they increased significantly, causing the dehydration of some berries. In August and early September the weather evolved normally, until the arrival of the harvest. As a result, we have a year with wines of good body and acidity. Fluid wines in their youth and with a good ageing capacity.
The 2013 vintage, rated as a very good one, began in a complicated way. In the early spring, in April and May, temperatures were low and there were heavy rains, significantly delaying the start of the growth cycle. This resulted in late flowering and therefore later ripening. Before the harvest, there was a considerable amount of rain, which produced an interspersed harvest. After a cold and rainy year, the profile of the wines they have produced are less concentrated than usual. Fresher and with a good acidity.
Sight Dark yet bright garnet colour, ruby rim, medium-high layer. Nose Aromas of ripe black fruit, toasted, roasted and liquorice flavours with light lactic notes. Mineral presence. Taste Tasty, fruity and toasted. Very balanced. Leaves a pleasant lingering finish.
Sight Intense, and very dark, almost opaque cherry colour. Dense tears that stain the glass. Nose Very nice, complex and elegant aromas. Before swirling the glass, elegant and intense toasted notes appear and give way to aromas of ripe fruit which, after swirling the glass, become fleshy. At the same time very creamy hints o spices and cocoa are also released on its intense and amazing mineral background. Taste Good wide and intense attack. Long, soft, velvety and very tasty mid palate with notes of ripe fruit nuanced by the aromas of sweet spices. Very good acidity that keeps the wine alive. Its tannins are noticeable but still very nice. Long finish with a good persistence.  An invinting and enjoyable Spanish wine.
Sight Intense cherry and dark. Nose Primary aromas of toasted wood, with notes of ripe black fruit. Taste Remember the feelings of the nose, medium body, fresh and correct acidity.

    Designation of Origin D.O. Toro

    Winery Telmo Rodríguez

In Toro, the red wines are mainly made with the Tinta de Toro grape variety, planted on soils of fluvial origin by the influence of the Duero River and its tributaries, grown on poor, sandy and dry soils the further away you move from the river. Toro offers powerful wines, well bodied, flavourful, complex, and tannic. Although on a smaller scale, the region also produces white wines using the Verdejo and Malvasía varieties. Since the ´80’s, Toro has experienced a revival in its wines, thanks to a new generation of highly skilled winemakers and the installation of many big names in the region, such as Pintia, a winery belonging to the Vega Sicília group, or Teso la Monja, part of Sierra Cantabria.

    Imágenes y situación D.O. Toro

It is safe to say that Telmo Rodríguez has the reputation of being one of the pioneers and best "driving winemakers", that is, winemakers that travel to different areas to produce wines from the same harvest, using only native varieties from their original regions, apart from paying special attention to the recovery of abandoned vineyards. Currently, Telmo Rodríguez, who enjoys being a winemaker more than an oenologist, is known in the wine industry for being one of the promoters of Spanish winemaking.
