Characteristics of Frank Cornelissen Munjebel
Frank Cornelissen Munjebel is a young Nerello Mascalese variety red wine produced by Frank Cornelissen in Terre Siciliane (Italy).
Son of a Belgian wine distributor, Frank Cornelissen has been immersed in the winemaking world his whole life. He began to make his own wines at a very early age and is currently known for creating natural wines with a lot of body. The key is to embrace and follow nature in the vineyard and then to vinify in a clean and organised manner in the winery. Located in the northern valley of the Etna volcano, in eastern Sicily (Italy), he currently has 19 hectares of quite tall vineyards that are used to make wines of great complexity and minerality.
Frank Cornelissen Munjebel comes from old 70-year-old strains, planted in volcanic soil at 735 metres above sea level. Frank works these vineyards without using herbicides, pesticides or any other chemicals. From time to time, he uses biodynamic treatments, but not on a strict timetable, rather taking his cue from what the vineyards themselves need. The harvest is carried out manually and selectively.
In the winery, the Frank Cornelissen Munjebel grape is destemmed and pressed lightly. Then alcoholic fermentation takes place spontaneously in fibreglass tanks with native yeasts and in contact with the skins for about 60 days. It then ages in 1500 or 2500 litre epoxy resin tanks. This wine is bottled without clarifying.
Frank Cornelissen Munjebel is a very good way to enjoy the local Nerello Mascalese variety. A grape with concentrated dry and sharp tannins found in the Nebbiolo variety, but with the lush, fruity flavour of Pinot Noir.
Frank Cornelissen Munjebel 2015 is a juicy natural red wine with cherries and raspberries on the nose combined with dried herbs, blue flowers and earthy notes. The palate is fresh, elegant and complex with vibrant fresh red fruit and mineral touches.
