Finca Viñas de Arcilla is a red wine made by Goyo García Viadero, in Gumiel de Mercado, D.O. Ribera del Duero.
Years ago, Goyo García Viadero decided to set out on a different path to that of the family winery, Valduero. Seeking the authenticity of native varieties in Castilla León, he restored old vineyards and reclaimed traditional practices in the vineyard rather than make use of modern viticultural techniques, which abuse herbicides and pesticides. He avoids using enzymes, non-native yeasts and conservatives in the winery.
Goyo García makes wine in three different areas: Ribera del Duero (Olmedillo de Roa, Villanueva de Gumiel and Anguix), in Cantabria in Valle del Liébana (Pumareña and Los Cos) and in Ribera del Arlanza. These wines speak of the land and each wine transports us to a different landscape, taking us further from the recent globalisation of the winemaking industry.
Finca Viñas de Arcilla is an estate located in Anguix (Burgos), 810 metres above sea level with a southern orientation and a continental climate. The vines are planted on red clay and sandy soils, and Tinta Fina grapes are mixed in the vineyard with Albillo grapes.
It is harvested manually and ferments for 10-15 days, with maceration for 3 weeks and an ageing period of 20 months in used 225 litre barrels. It is not stabilised or filtered.
Finca Viñas de Arcilla is an appealing wine, with muscle and dark fruits, where the wood and fruit fuse perfectly.

Tasting notes
This was a complicated year. Although the sprouting of the vines was slightly early, the low temperatures recorded during the spring delayed the growth cycle, which no longer recovered in the summer, despite having a warm month of July.
The harvest was carried out at a fast pace, and with the extra effort of the viticulturers, who discarded the fruit that did not meet the optimal conditions. This way, they made sure that they avoided the probable effect of the botrytis attacks due to the rains they had around this time.
The wines from this vintage, rated as a good one, offer good colour intensity, great fruit expression and a lot of freshness.
Regarding climate, the 2012 vintage started with the sprouting of the vines in the beginning of spring with the cooler temperatures. In May, generous rainfall and high temperatures gave way to a generalised drought throughout the summer. Luckily, the rains started at the onset of the ripening. The precipitations at the beginning of October, and the nice temperatures during the harvest, resulted in the a uniform phenolic ripening. The wines from this vintage have a good alcoholic strength, balanced by moderate levels of acidity, with a good colour and phenolic intensity, and a suitable level of tannins, all important features for a perfect ageing.
After a predictable winter, the weather changed in spring. Temperatures were higher than normal, which caused an early start of the grapes’ ripening cycle. The normal course of the climate at the end of spring and at the beginning of the summer, allowed the vines to recover their usual pace, and the veraison took place on the expected dates. The beginning of the harvest was slightly early due to the strong heat the grapes suffered during their ripening. However, the nice weather throughout the harvest, without rain or frost, provided grapes with an impeccable health. Wines from the 2011 vintage have a slightly higher alcohol strength than usual, with a perfect balance thanks to their natural acidity, concentration of colour and phenolic richness. For all these reasons, this vintage has been classified as excellent, offering high-quality young wines, and wines with the ideal features for their ageing.
