Characteristics of Finca Sobreño Crianza

Finca Sobreño Crianza is a red wine with D.O.Toro, produced by Bodegas Sobreño in the municipality of Toro (Zamora).

Bodegas Sobreño started its journey in the late 90s, when the San Ildefonso family, originally from Laguardia (Rioja), decided to buy 80 hectares of vineyard and build a new winery in the municipality of Toro.

Currently, half of the vines are planted in vase shape and are more than 30 years old, while the other part is cultivated in espalier since 1999. 25% of them have organic certification. They also control 90 hectares owned by winegrowers of the area.

The philosophy of Bodegas Sobreño is based on making quality wines, keeping the traditional cultivation method, with an excellent grape, small sized, with good ripeness and controlling the production.

Finca Sobreño Crianza  is a wine made from Tinta de Toro, from their own vineyards.

Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. Once they arrive at the winery, they are destemmed. Then, they macerate for 4 days at 10ºC before fermentation. The fermentation takes place at a maximum temperature of 28ºC. The maceration lasts around 28 days. When it has ended, the wine is transferred to American oak barrels that are less than 4 years old. Here, the wine is aged for 8 months. Before it is launched on the market, it is left to stand in the bottle for a minimum of 6 months.

Finca Sobreño Crianza is an elegant, complex and balanced wine. The fruit stands out from the ageing notes, with prevailing black fruit compote with light toastings.

Tasting notes Finca Sobreño Crianza

This year, which was described as a very good one, started with high temperatures that did not lower until the end of November. There were also quite low water reserves. In the early spring, temperatures began to rise, leading to the first bleedings of the vines. The beginning of the growth cycle did not present any major upheavals, except for the low humidity due to the lack of rain during the winter. During May, the vines began to develop their buds, causing the flowering during the first week of June. When they started to ripen, the drought and the stress on the vines was evident. At the end of August, there a certain amount of rain helped to hydrate the bunches, which helped to collect the healthiest grapes. As a result, we have a year with wines of a concentrated profile and some acidity. Perfect in their youth and with a medium ageing capacity.
The vintage began with a rainy autumn and low temperatures that produced frost for days in a row in December. At the beginning of March, temperatures began to recover and at the beginning of April, the start of the growth cycle was already visible. Due to the persistence of high temperatures, the growth of the vines took place faster, bringing forward the flowering. In June, temperatures dropped but in July they increased significantly, causing the dehydration of some berries. In August and early September the weather evolved normally, until the arrival of the harvest. As a result, we have a year with wines of good body and acidity. Fluid wines in their youth and with a good ageing capacity.
The 2013 vintage, rated as a very good one, began in a complicated way. In the early spring, in April and May, temperatures were low and there were heavy rains, significantly delaying the start of the growth cycle. This resulted in late flowering and therefore later ripening. Before the harvest, there was a considerable amount of rain, which produced an interspersed harvest. After a cold and rainy year, the profile of the wines they have produced are less concentrated than usual. Fresher and with a good acidity.

    Production area D.O. Toro

    Winery Sobreño

In Toro, the red wines are mainly made with the Tinta de Toro grape variety, planted on soils of fluvial origin by the influence of the Duero River and its tributaries, grown on poor, sandy and dry soils the further away you move from the river. Toro offers powerful wines, well bodied, flavourful, complex, and tannic. Although on a smaller scale, the region also produces white wines using the Verdejo and Malvasía varieties. Since the ´80’s, Toro has experienced a revival in its wines, thanks to a new generation of highly skilled winemakers and the installation of many big names in the region, such as Pintia, a winery belonging to the Vega Sicília group, or Teso la Monja, part of Sierra Cantabria.
