Characteristics of Ferratus

Ferratus is a red wine from D.O. Ribera del Duero produced by Bodegas Cuevas Jiménez. It is a single-variety of Tempranillo.

The grapes come from vineyards cultivated in vase-shape, located in La Horra, Olmedillo, Quintana de Pidio and Sotillo de la Ribera. After the manual harvest and once they arrive at the winery, in 15-kg boxes, the grape berries are fermented in stainless steel deposits. However, the malolactic fermentation is carried out in oak barrels.

Ferratus is aged for 14 months in new oak barrels, mainly made of French oak, using customised roastings. The wine is bottled without cold stabilisation.

Tasting notes Ferratus

After the withering in a mild winter, the warm start of spring brought sprouting forward by almost 10 days. The summer, which was quite cool and dry, enabled the good evolution of the growth cycle and a balanced ripening. This was a vintage without setbacks. Worth mentioning is the high production of this vintage due to good climatic behaviour during the harvest. The wines from this vintage have great colour intensity, and a high fruity expression on the nose and in the mouth. Their balance and tannic potential stand out; these features show us the great potential to produce great wines for ageing, and for lighter and fruitier productions.
Regarding climate, the 2012 vintage started with the sprouting of the vines in the beginning of spring with the cooler temperatures. In May, generous rainfall and high temperatures gave way to a generalised drought throughout the summer. Luckily, the rains started at the onset of the ripening. The precipitations at the beginning of October, and the nice temperatures during the harvest, resulted in the a uniform phenolic ripening. The wines from this vintage have a good alcoholic strength, balanced by moderate levels of acidity, with a good colour and phenolic intensity, and a suitable level of tannins, all important features for a perfect ageing.
Ferratus 2011 is a powerful, full-bodied and structured red wine. An excellent vintage for this wine that reveals the balance between the expression of the vintage and the time spent aging. A distinguished nose with aromas of ripe red fruit on a very noticeably roasted background. On the palate it is intense, with volume and a lingering and lasting finish.
The 2009 vintage started with a winter of low temperatures, which gave way to a cool spring. A dry summer, with warm days and mild nights, and great temperature changes between day and night, led to very balanced, complex and concentrated grapes. As for climate, it was the perfect vintage. This influenced the health of the grapes, which was excellent. Therefore, the wines from this vintage have a good acidity, which is responsible for long-lived wines with a good structure. And generally, responsible for very fruity wines with fresh red fruit that stands out. One of the great vintages of this region.
Sight Intense picota cherry colour with violet reflections. High robe, clean and bright. Dense, tinted tears stain the glass. Nose Clean and very intense nose. Abundant black fruit, ripe blueberries, with touches of white flowers, chocolate and cocoa, along with a light mineral note. Notes of tobacco, cloves and pepper compliment this magnificent and complex set. Taste In the mouth this red wine is powerful and intense as well as silky and elegant. A refreshing, integrated acidity gives this wine structure and definition along with well-polished tannins that add character and power. Long and very persistent finish.
Sight Intense cherry red garnet and trimmed with high layer. Nose Intense and complex. From the outset we find the ripe red fruit. A cup move, appear the wood species and snuff, some hint of vanilla. Finally, there are memories of toffee and leather.
Taste Soft and pleasant entry. Ferratus is a very tasty wine, intense, dry and smooth. Spacious and with good acidity. Memories of the fruit and wood. Long finish.
Sight Intense cherry red garnet and trimmed with high layer. Nose Balanced scent that hints of these flavors suggestive upbringing which may almost cover the fruit completely: roasted elegant, roasted, caramel, and little sense alcoholic. Taste Surprising regularity and roundness without its edges, dense and concentrated, dominated French oak always softer than the American. Some note of licorice, some very ripe fruit. It means a dry mouth.
