Characteristics of Fento Tinto

Fento Tinto is a red wine produced by the winery Fento Wines in the subarea Condado de Tea (Pontevedra) in D.O. Rías Baixas.

 

Eulogio Pomares, prime mover of Zárate, is the alma mater of Fento Wines, a family-run winery that began its journey in 2012 with the clear objective of making Galician wines with a modern style, and with maximum respect for the natural surroundings and tradition.

They advocate for local varieties, indigenous to Rías Baixas, giving great importance to the vine-soil-climate-wine grower group, as a whole. They work with small wine growers that share the philosophy of rational work and respect for the environment.

The vines are located in the province of Pontevedra, in different subareas like Valle de Salnés or Condado de Tea, in D.O. Rías Baixas. Vines are planted on "Xabre" soils, a name given traditionally to sandy soils with weathered granite. Their vines are trained in the pergola or "emparrado" style.

 

Fento Tinto is a wine made from Mencía, Caíño Tinto, Espadeiro, Brancellao and Souson, from vineyards between 10 and 15 years old located at sea level, planted on soils comprised of mica and silicates. Harvest is performed by hand. Once the grapes are destemmed, they ferment in stainless steel deposits at a controlled temperature for 15 days. When the fermentation ends, the skins are pressed and the wine is racked to another deposit, where it goes through the malolactic fermentation. Before bottling, it is stabilised and filtered.

 

Fento Tinto is a fresh, unctuous wine with great structure. A very fruity red wine with a marked Atlantic character.

Tasting notes Fento Tinto

The 2017 vintage has been distinguished by the excellent health of the vineyard and the intense heat. Winter and spring were warmer than normal, accelerating the growth cycle 15 days and which was prolonged during summer, bringing forward the date of the harvest to the end of August. The growth cycle went smoothly, with good flowering and no notable pests. In summer, the drought worsened and in August they began to see symptoms of dehydration in the bunches. However, rains at the beginning of September restored the balance of the vineyard. The wines of this vintage are identified by having something more volume due to its warmth and great freshness. A vintage to enjoy young, or as it is the norm for great wines of the area, to save for a few years.

Winery Fento Wines

Rías Baixas wines would not be where they are today without the native Albariño grape variety. Although red wines are also produced in Rías Baixas, practically 100% of Rías Baixas wines are white. Among them, the vast majority of them are made with the Albariño grape. As well as young wines, fresh and aromatic, the region also makes wines aged in the barrels, complex wines with great personalities. Albariño wines can either be single varieties, or be part of a blend with other characteristic grapes of the region: Treixadura, Loureira Blanca and Godello.
