Characteristics of Enric Soler Istiu

Enric Soler Istiu is a white wine coupage of the Xarel·lo and Malvasía de Sitges varieties produced by Enric Soler, who owns one of the most important and interesting micro-cellars in Penedès.

Istiu is the latest creation from this producer, who is using a combination of varieties for the first time. Enric Soler is known for seeking and promoting the maximum expression of the Xarel·lo grape in his white wines, and this time he has given the limelight to Malvasía de Sitges, a variety that comes from a small vineyard behind the winemaker’s house, in Font-Rubí, Barcelona.

To make Enric Soler Istiu, the grapes ferment with their native yeasts and are aged separately in used French oak barrels for 9 months. A very high quality limited production.

Enric Soler Istiu 2017 is a well-rounded and exquisite white wine. On the nose it offers a perfect balance of floral and fruity aromas as well as a subtle and well-integrated influence from the barrel. On the palate it is heavy and silky, with an agile but persistent mid-palate and a long and elegant finish.

Today, the D.O Penedès is experimenting with viticulture and winemaking like no other region in Spain, home to a vast range of different grape varieties. The region is home to traditional white and red varieties, foreign ones, noble ones, permitted grapes, experimental grapes, and those that demostrate intrinsic qualities. As well as the grapes, the production techniques used are also worth noting, the location of the vineyards, the yields per hectare, the wines produced using traditional, original or even exclusive blends, the different ageing times, as well as the complexity of the different barrels used! But the reality is, given the vast diversity, it can be difficult to pinpoint what really defines a wine from Penedès, since there are so many types of wines and wineries in the region. However, the common denominator of all the wines from Penedès continues to be balance and quality.

Cal Raspallet Catalan farmhouse is a typical late nineteenth century that maintains the same structure. The vineyard of the Taus is a piece of 0.89 hectares of vineyard located in the Alt Penedès, in the end of Torrelavit. Taus is called, in honor of moles community residents in the plot. The vineyard was planted by the year 1940 (and was previously vineyard but was torn during the Civil War to form part of an airfield Republican). It is a single vineyard and single variety with a great diversity of clones. The fact of working a small plot of vineyards allows a very direct and specific impact at a time to act.
