Characteristics of Emilio Valerio Viña de San Martín
Viña de San Martín is a D.O. Navarra red wine by Emilio Valerio. A coupage of Garnacha (95 percent) and Tempranillo (5 percent) from vineyards in San Martín at 580 metres above sea level in the San Martín valley, on the hillside of Montejurra, in the town of Dicastillo (Navarra). The San Martín vineyard has clayey soils and is located in the foothills of Montejurra (facing North) giving it an important Atlantic influence. It ferments and macerates for 30 days with light pump-overs at the end of the maceration period. Afterwards, Viña de San Martín ages in various French oak barrels on its fine lees for 18 months.
Some wine regions have to bear the weight of their own prestige and fame, and this is certainly the case for Navarra. For many years, the white and reds produced in this region came second to the rosés produced here with the noble Grenacha variety. However, the last two decades have seen ongoing changes in the wine-making sector in Navarra, changes which have completely transformed the styles of wine produced and have been consistently worthwhile, resulting in some of the white and red wines produced in Navarra being ranked among best rated in Spain.
