Characteristics of Els Bassots

Els Bassots is a natural white wine from D.O. Conca de Barberà produced by the winery Escoda-Sanahuja. It is a single-variety wine made with Chenín Blanc.

The grapes used come from a single vineyard, which in fact gives the wine its name. Located between Prenafeta and Montblanc, at an altitude of around 450 metres, the soils are clayey and calcareous. The agriculture carried out is biodynamic and the production of the wine is natural. This vinification method makes the final wine different from the wines we are used to drinking, wines with the characteristic and usually strong smell, and some possible impurities. It is the inevitable result of not filtering or clarifying the wine and fermenting it with natural yeasts from the vineyard itself.

Beyond the natural method, Els Bassots follows the production processes that were used decades ago, when the so-called white ‘brisats’ wines were made. Thus, the fermentations are carried out with the skins – just like with red wines – leading to more complex wines with a more intense colour. Ultimately, Els Bassots is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels before the final bottling.

Escoda-Sanahuja is a winery that makes natural wines – both white and red – through biodynamic agriculture. The project, located in Montblanc, is part of the Mediterranean biodynamic working group and the Association of Natural Wine Producers (PVN).

Tasting notes Els Bassots

Sight Intense, golden veiled yellow, owing to the wine’s lack of filtration. Nose A high intensity, complex and nuanced nose. White and yellow ripe fruit notes, citric notes, lees and sweet spices, all engulfed by a slight touch of wood. Taste Rich on the palate with a silky smooth texture. Great, deep, aromatic acidity. A good, long and persistent finish with hints of wood. Plenty of fruit and mineral notes.

Sight White wine, pale yellow with orange reflections, slightly veiled (due to not be filtered). Nose Citrus flavors (of China tangerine, grapefruit) with a spicy background. Taste In the mouth is wide, silky and long, fresh aftertaste.

Winery Escoda Sanahuja

As with many other Catalonian wine regions, the DO. Conca de Barberà is developing its own territorial identity that over the years has been redefining the personality of the wines and the region, with the help of the red Trepat grape variety. The Trepat grape can be used to produce good sparkling rosés, rosés with character, fresh red wines, as well as elegant blanc de noirs. In just a few years the region and this grape variety have shown their potential, their versatility, and the possibility of carrying out R&D (Research and Development) with them. There are still few wineries who produce single variety wines using this grape, but most importantly, all of them have become aware of the obligation to enhance the uniqueness that defines the territory and the new style of wine to be imposed in the twenty-first century.
