Els Bassots is a natural white wine from D.O. Conca de Barberà produced by the winery Escoda-Sanahuja. It is a single-variety wine made with Chenín Blanc.
The grapes used come from a single vineyard, which in fact gives the wine its name. Located between Prenafeta and Montblanc, at an altitude of around 450 metres, the soils are clayey and calcareous. The agriculture carried out is biodynamic and the production of the wine is natural. This vinification method makes the final wine different from the wines we are used to drinking, wines with the characteristic and usually strong smell, and some possible impurities. It is the inevitable result of not filtering or clarifying the wine and fermenting it with natural yeasts from the vineyard itself.
Beyond the natural method, Els Bassots follows the production processes that were used decades ago, when the so-called white ‘brisats’ wines were made. Thus, the fermentations are carried out with the skins – just like with red wines – leading to more complex wines with a more intense colour. Ultimately, Els Bassots is aged for 15 months in French oak barrels before the final bottling.
Escoda-Sanahuja is a winery that makes natural wines – both white and red – through biodynamic agriculture. The project, located in Montblanc, is part of the Mediterranean biodynamic working group and the Association of Natural Wine Producers (PVN).
