Characteristics of Elías Mora Crianza

Elías Mora Crianza is a red wine produced by Bodegas Elías Mora in San Román de Hornija, D.O. Toro.

 

Bodegas Elías Mora is a winery that was founded in 2000 by two Victorias (Victoria Benavides and Victoria Pariente, who chose to make high-quality wines since the very beginning in D.O. Toro. Currently, the winery is directed by Victoria Benavides, one of the most notorious women in the Spanish wine scene.

The vineyards of the winery Bodegas Elías Mora (the name of the former owner of these vineyards), located amidst the Duero and the Hornija rivers, planted on calcareous soils with surface gravel and poor in organic matter, are cultivated in a traditional way, with low yields. These vineyards are planted with pre-phylloxera Tinta de Toro vines. Therefore, they have not been grafted.

All of this allows Bodegas Elías Mora to make wines with the utmost quality, from local vineyards that show all the character and the tradition of a historic wine area in Spain.

 

Elías Mora Crianza is a wine made with Tinta de Toro from the winery’s own vineyards, located at around 800 metres of altitude.

After a manual harvest in 20-kg boxes, with selection of the grapes in the vineyard and the winery, they go through a pre-fermentation maceration for 3 days. For the fermentation, there is a seeding with selected yeasts, and a fermentation in stainless steel deposits. Once the malolactic fermentation has ended in these deposits, it is aged for 12 months in French and American oak barrels.

 

Elías Mora Crianza is a mature, powerful and balances wine. On the nose, the aromas of black fruit stand out, with toasted and slightly spicy notes. In the mouth, it is meaty, with volume and somewhat fresh.

Tasting notes Elías Mora Crianza

This year, which was described as a very good one, started with high temperatures that did not lower until the end of November. There were also quite low water reserves. In the early spring, temperatures began to rise, leading to the first bleedings of the vines. The beginning of the growth cycle did not present any major upheavals, except for the low humidity due to the lack of rain during the winter. During May, the vines began to develop their buds, causing the flowering during the first week of June. When they started to ripen, the drought and the stress on the vines was evident. At the end of August, there a certain amount of rain helped to hydrate the bunches, which helped to collect the healthiest grapes.As a result, we have a year with wines of a concentrated profile and some acidity. Perfect in their youth and with a medium ageing capacity.
The vintage began with a rainy autumn and low temperatures that produced frost for days in a row in December. At the beginning of March, temperatures began to recover and at the beginning of April, the start of the growth cycle was already visible. Due to the persistence of high temperatures, the growth of the vines took place faster, bringing forward the flowering. In June, temperatures dropped but in July they increased significantly, causing the dehydration of some berries. In August and early September the weather evolved normally, until the arrival of the harvest.As a result, we have a year with wines of good body and acidity. Fluid wines in their youth and with a good ageing capacity.
Sight Pillorying intense red with cardinal rivets. Nose Complex aroma of black fruit confit, liquorice and fine woods, tobacco, mineral and spice. Taste Very fleshy but elegant . Evokes licorice and fruit jam memories.

    Winery Elias Mora

    In Toro, the red wines are mainly made with the Tinta de Toro grape variety, planted on soils of fluvial origin by the influence of the Duero River and its tributaries, grown on poor, sandy and dry soils the further away you move from the river. Toro offers powerful wines, well bodied, flavourful, complex, and tannic. Although on a smaller scale, the region also produces white wines using the Verdejo and Malvasía varieties. Since the ´80’s, Toro has experienced a revival in its wines, thanks to a new generation of highly skilled winemakers and the installation of many big names in the region, such as Pintia, a winery belonging to the Vega Sicília group, or Teso la Monja, part of Sierra Cantabria.
