Characteristics of Ederra Reserva

Ederra Reserva is a red wine produced by Bodegas Bilbaínas in Haro, D.O.Ca. La Rioja.

 

Ederra is one of the brands produced by Bodegas Bilbaínas, following the lines of the classic Rioja style. Using local varieties of the region and respecting the winemaking tradition of La Rioja to the maximum extent. 

 

Ederra Reserva is made from Tempranillo, from vines located in La Rioja Alta.

Once the grapes are destemmed and crushed, they ferment in stainless steel deposits with a controlled temperature of 28ºC, with two weeks of maceration. This wine is aged for 18 months in American oak barrels. Before it is launched on the market, it is left to stand in the bottle for a minimum of 2 years.

Tasting notes Ederra Reserva

After a winter with normal temperatures and rainfall for D.O.Ca Rioja, high temperatures in spring and summer market his year, as well as the absence of rain at the most dangerous times for the vineyard. These factors led to very healthy vines, but the harvest was brought forward three weeks on average. As a result, this year was rated as a very good one in the area, with the only drawback of not reaching full ripeness. Therefore, the wines from this vintage are those typical from Rioja, with a slightly higher alcoholic strength and a good balance between acidity and ripening.
Ederra Reserva 2014 is a meaty, structured and elegant red wine. This vintage clearly shows us all its aromatic potential, aromas of black fruit in the entry on a toasted background from its ageing. Pleasant entry in the mouth, with a long and persistent finish.
This vintage was marked by a very rainy and cold spring just at the time of the growth cycle. This fact caused it to ripen unevenly and with a certain delay. Thanks to a fairly dry September and October, the grapes that ripened with a certain delay were harvested in a selective manner. A complicated vintage, but with good results since there was an exhaustive selection of the grapes. A good balance between concentration and acidity in their youth define the wines from this vintage.

The century-old Bodegas Bilbaínas were born with a French heart and were established with a Riojan spirit. Bodegas Bilbaínas is the oldest bottling firm in La Rioja. It is the winery with the largest surface area of underground caves ("calados") in the whole region (3,400 m2). It also has the most extensive area of vineyards in the municipality of Haro. Since the beginning, the winery has been defined by its deep knowledge of the territory and the care in the production of its single-vineyard wines. These are extremely identified with the plots where they came from, hence their names: in 1911 Viña Pomal was created; in 1921, Viña Zaco; in 1923, the white wine Viña Paceta; and the range was extended in 1994 with La Vicalanda reserva, a distinguished and expressive wine that was born from the 9-hectare farm, selected in the vineyard area of Viña Pomal.
