Characteristics of Dolç d'Orto Negre
Dolç d’Orto Negre is a sweet wine from the D.O Monstant produced by the Orto Vins winery. This is a single variety wine, made using only the Garnacha grape variety.
The grapes used to produce this wine are taken from various estates located near the town of El Masroig, spanning a total 4.5 hectares between them and lying at various altitudes between 90 and 330 metres. The vineyards are home to calcareous soils containing clay and gravel, with vines that are between 40 and 90 years old. The vines are cultivated organically and are low bush vines, following traditional methods.
Fermentation kicks of the winemaking process, being carried out in stainless steel tanks of capacities ranging between 200 and 400 litres. Following this, maceration takes place for 28 days. Dolç d’Orto Negre is then briefly aged in stainless steel tanks. Before being bottled, the wine is lightly filtered in order to remove any possible impurities.
Orto Vins, situated in the Montsant, was founded back in 2008 by four partners. Among them is Joan Asens, who worked for a long time with Álvaro Palacios in the Priorat.
The DO Montsant is situated in the province of Tarragona, surrounding the DOQ Priorat. Although a young Denominación de Origen, The DO Monstant is located in a land with a large history in winemaking. The wines, mostly reds, are typically made with Grenache and Carignan grapes and are authentic, wild and artisanal. Wines produced in this region are usually extremely good value given the high quality.
