Characteristics of Dolç d'Orto Blanc
Dolç d’Orto Blanc is a sweet wine from the D.O Montsant produced by the Orto Vins winery. This wine is a blend of Garnacha Blanca (80%) and other various local varieties (20%).
The grapes used to produce Dolç d’Orto Blanc come from various estates located in the town of El Masroig, spanning a total of 1,340 hectares between them and lying at various altitudes between 50 and 330 metres. The vineyards are home to calcareous soils, predominantly clay and gravel. The vines are old, aged between 40 and 130 years and are grown on low bush vines. The Viticulture is carried out using traditional techniques with an organic twist.
The winemaking process of Dolç d’Orto Blanc begins with fermentation, which takes place in 200 litre capacity stainless steel tanks, followed by maceration, which takes place for 2 weeks. A brief ageing period also takes place in stainless steel tanks. Before being bottled, the wine is lightly filtered in order to eliminate any impurities.
Orto Vins, situated in the Montsant, was founded back in 2008 by four partners. Among them is Joan Asens, who worked for a long time with Álvaro Palacios in the Priorat.
The DO Montsant is situated in the province of Tarragona, surrounding the DOQ Priorat. Although a young Denominación de Origen, The DO Monstant is located in a land with a large history in winemaking. The wines, mostly reds, are typically made with Grenache and Carignan grapes and are authentic, wild and artisanal. Wines produced in this region are usually extremely good value given the high quality.
