Characteristics of Vivanco Reserva

Vivanco Reserva is a barrel-aged red wine made in the D.O.Ca. Rioja by the Vivanco winery with the Tempranillo and Graciano varieties.

The name Vivanco has been linked to wine since the early twentieth century, when Pedro Vivanco González began winemaking the village of Alberite (La Rioja). Now it is the fourth generation who are carrying the family tradition in Briones (Rioja Alta) with a completely underground winery and an impressive museum of wine culture stretching over 4,000 m2 and including wine-themed paintings from great artists like Picasso, Miró, Sorolla, Dalí and Tapies.

Vivanco Reserva comes from a selection of vineyards located in the village of Briones. These are strains with an average age of 35 years planted in clay-calcareous soils. They use conventional agriculture with sustainable practices that respect the natural environment. When the grape reaches optimum ripeness, it is harvested by hand in small boxes.

In the winery, all Vivanco Reserva grapes lie in a cold chamber for 24 hours before passing over the selection table. Each variety is vinified separately. To do this, each variety is gently pressed and the resulting must is transferred by gravity into small French oak vats. There it macerates with its skins and ferments at a controlled temperature of 30ºC with light pump overs for 20 days. The wine then ages in new and one year old French and American oak barrels for 24 months and before bottling, it is refined for a few months in French oak vats. Finally, it rests in the bottle 2 years before being sold.

Vivanco Reserva is a safe choice for those who love this world renowned denomination. Flavoursome, complex and deep, it is a pure reflection of the wonderful Rioja Alta terroir.

Tasting notes Vivanco Reserva

Vivanco Reserva 2014 is a mature red wine with aromas of cherry and ripe blackberries and an earthy, mineral background with spicy touches. On the palate it is deep, concentrated and complex. An enveloping and silky mid-palate with a long and persistent finish.
Dinastía Vivanco Reserva 2012 is a mature, complex and elegant red wine. This vintage stands out for the balance between maturity and freshness. On the nose, the aromas of ripe red fruit stand out, with toasted notes from its ageing. In the mouth, it is expressive and very long.
An excellent vintage in Rioja. With a mild autumn, and a cold and rainy winter, the growth season began with enough resources for the perfect development of the vines. During this period, there were no pests and diseases until the end of the growth cycle. During the harvest, there were no significant rains, so the health and ripening of the grapes were excellent. A great year with great aged wines that can be stored for a long time. Perfect balance between the most amiable tannins and the good acidity, which give these wines an extraordinary length.
2010 was considered the perfect vintage after some very good years. An optimal growth cycle, without incidents regarding the health of the vineyards. The harvest took place during a magnificent state of the vines and with a moderate production, with good fruit setting and slow ripening. A great year with excellent ageing potential, which resulted in spicy and fruity wines, with a very good structure and acidity.
Sight Intense and quite dark cherry colour with tile red reflections. Clean and bright wine with thin tears. Nose Great, intense and complex aromatic set. Its notes of stewed ripe red and black fruit are wrapped in a wide range of spicy notes, of good and refined toasted aromas and a lot of creaminess. Its mineral notes, its subtle herbal hints and its fresh balsamic nuances make a nice background. Taste A round, deep and elegant wine with a broad attack and a velvety, very tasty and fresh mid palate. The refined toasted notes stand out on the notes of ripe fruit, spices and balsamic aromas. It shows a fresh acidity and polished tannins. Its long and very persistent finish leaves a good toasted and fruity aftertaste.

Sight Intense cherry colour with quite dark maroon edges. Clean and bright wine with thin tears. Nose Wide aromatic set in which the good toasted aromas provided by the wood are relesed on first nosing. When it opens up, a explosion of fruit is released. Its notes of ripe black and red fruit are accompanied by spicy and balsamic touches. Chocolate, toffee and light touches of animal leather are also felt along with a balsamic hint on a subtle mineral background. Taste A round wine with a broad attack and a velvety, very tasty and fresh mid palate. The fine toasted notes dominate the palate over the notes of ripe fruit and the spicy and balsamic aromas. Fresh acidity and polished tannins. It has a long and very persistent finish that leaves a good toasted and fruity aftertaste. The palate is fresh and round and has a well balance between its fruity notes and its acidity.
Sight Dark cherry red colour with touches of brick red reminding us of its time spent ageing in barrel. Nose Aromas of spicy oak and eucalyptus as well as mature black and red fruit. Taste Good balance between the tertiary aromas from the extended maturation and the developed fruit aromas. Good intensity and balance, soft, round tannins, and log finish with hints of toast and liquorice.

25/01/17 Dinastía Vivanco Reserva 2010 This was a reorder from a vintage that I found excellent. I firts came across the winery on holiday in Mallorca but have not been without it since I found it at Decantalo. Wonderful classic rioja and despite the time it spends in barrels, there is none of the overdose of wood, that sometimes spoils the rioja. I find it exactly to my liking and so do a lot of my friends.

    Imágenes y situación D.O.Ca. Rioja

The winery is designed to maximize natural wines and unique character of its various payments and varieties. All the grapes go through a quality control through a double selection table grapes and grains, to begin a post-cold maceration and fermentation in small French oak destinations. As a result, produces a range of modern wines, and bold personality, which summarizes the entrepreneurial and innovative Bodegas Dinastia Vivanco.
