Characteristics of Cune Imperial Gran Reserva

Cune Imperial Gran Reserva is a red wine made in the La Rioja by C.V.N.E. (Compañía Vinícola del Norte de España), a historic winery founded in the late nineteenth century.

Cune Imperial Grand Reserva is considered by some as one of the great wines of Spain. Its 2014 vintage was selected by the prestigious magazine the WineSpectator as the best wine in the world.

It is a blend made from Tempranillo as the main variety with a small percentage of Mazuelo and Graciano. The grapes come from old vines planted 45 years ago in the town of Villalba. The harvest is done manually, a first selection of grapes is carried out, and they are transferred to the winery in small boxes that help keep the grapes in perfect condition.

Once in the winery, the grapes are cooled and passed to a sorting table where only the best bunches are selected. The grapes are macerated cold before undergoing a controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks, at the end of another long post-fermentation, maceration is performed.

Cune Imperial Gran Reserva undergoes a 22-month aging in barrels of French and American oak, during that time, rackings are applied every 4 months.

After the aging, it is clarified and bottled and is aged in the bottle in the cellar before hitting the market.

Cune Imperial Gran Reserva is a classic Rioja wine. Fine, elegant, balanced and rounded, a great job.

Although it can be consumed now, it has a large storage capacity.

Tasting notes Cune Imperial Gran Reserva

A good balance and few climate incidents define this vintage. The autumn began with mild temperatures and lack of rain. In March began the rain,as well as the development of the vines. At the beginning of the growth cycle of the vines, temperatures decrease and there were a lot of rainy days. This caused an irregular growth of the vineyard. After an unstable month of May, the temperatures increased, and a cycle without rains began. This resulted in perfect sprouts and a good flowering. The summer months were warm and with some heat waves, which caused a slower growth cycle and some symptoms of water stress, and thus a concentration of fruit. At the end of September, and before the harvest, there was some rain that was perfect for a great year thanks to the perfect ripening of the grapes. Good acidity and concentration define the wines from this vintage. Fine wines with a great ageing potential.
An excellent vintage in Rioja. With a mild autumn, and a cold and rainy winter, the growth season began with enough resources for the perfect development of the vines. During this period, there were no pests and diseases until the end of the growth cycle. During the harvest, there were no significant rains, so the health and ripening of the grapes were excellent. A great year with great aged wines that can be stored for a long time. Perfect balance between the most amiable tannins and the good acidity, which give these wines an extraordinary length.
Sight A pretty garnet colour. Nose The nose is a complex, full of nuances. There are varietal aromas. Ripe forest fruits and liquorice with notes of the barrel: cloves, fruit, leaves and snuff. Taste Balanced, silky, soft, elegant. Very greedy with hints of liquorice in the aftertaste.
Sight Ruby colour with maroon edge. Clean and bright wine of medium robe and a slightly coloured uniform-falling tear. Nose Complex, clean and intense. Ripe red fruit, fine toasted notes, spices, nails, coffee, liquorice, vanilla, balsamic touches, eucalyptus, rosemary, tobacco, and wet mountain aromas. Taste Good attack, silky and elegant mid-palate, with a great and well-defined acidity that provides a lot of freshness, many fruit and elegant toasted nuances that are repeated at retro-olfaction. Very long and persistent finish. Great, well-balanced red wine without edges.
Sight The tasting repport of this wine is being translated. Meanwhile, you can check the Spanish version.
Sight Nice maroon colour with tile red edges, characteristic of this kind of wines. Bright wine with very elegant tears. Nose Intense, deep and concentrated aromas, with notes that improve after aeration. Initially, its intense and elegant toasted, smoked and balsamic hints are released. When it opens up, the intense notes of ripe black fruit are displayed, mixed with subtle, creamy spices which reach a perfect balance. Slightly herbal background. Taste Wide, bulky and well-bodied wine, which coats the mouth entirely with its aromas. It has a long, very expressive, velvety mid palate, with a great balance. Excellent acidity and round tannins. Long and very persistent finish.

Imágenes y situación D.O.Ca. Rioja

Cvne is the winery that gave rise to the company in 1879. And it still retains its original site: the wine Station District of Haro in Rioja Alta. The Haro winery consists of a set of buildings and drafts, most of the nineteenth century, arranged around a courtyard. Above them were built pavilions processing, bottling and shipping of wine that are now preserved.
