COZs vm-Castelão is a natural and organic red wine made with the Castelão variety in Lisbon by the COZs winery.
Following the untimely death of the prestigious José Mendonça, winemakers Tiago Teles and Antonio Marques-da-Cruz took on his vineyards in Figueira da Foz, a town north of Lisbon. Together they form COZs, a small project that produces wines with a natural approach and strong personality.
COZs vm-Castelão comes from “Quinta da Murta”, a vineyard located a few kilometres from the Atlantic coast, in the Montejunto region (Lisbon). These are young vines planted in clay and calcareous soils and organically cultivated. The harvest is carried out manually at the optimum point of ripeness.
In the winery, the COZs vm-Castelão grapes are fermented with native yeasts in 1,000-litre tanks and then pressed to age in used wooden barrels for 11 months. The wine is finally bottled without being filtered, clarified or adding sulphur.
Made without filters or additions, COZs vm-Castelão comes from prestigious vineyards. The soils have an Atlantic influence and produce a wine that is full-bodied but not at all heavy.
