Characteristics of Convento San Francisco

Convento de San Francisco is a red wine from D.O Ribera del Duero produced by the winery with the same name, Convento de San Francisco.

This winery is founded on the remains of an old convent, San Francisco de Peñafiel from the 8th century, located in Peñafiel (Valldolid).

Convento de San Francisco is 100% produced from Tinta del País (Tempranillo). The vines are 25 to 100 years of ages, located between 760 and 970 meters above sea level. Planted in sandy, clay and chalk soils.

The harvest is completed by hand and the grapes are transported to the wineryin small containers of 15 kg capacity, where the grapes will be processed again for a second selection on the table. This is to ensure maximum quality control of the grape.

The grapes are fermented in 25,000 kg stainless steel containers. Convento de San Francisco is then aged for 12 months in 225 litre American (30%) and French (70%) oak barrels.

Tasting notes Convento San Francisco

The 2015 vintage started with a winter that had good groundwater reserves. The spring was warm and dry until well into the month of June, when there were intense rainfall at the beginning of the blooming. A summer with some well spread out storms gave way to a very dry autumn. The harvest was slightly ahead of the usual dates, but the analytical and organoleptic features, and the balance of the berries, were ideal. Thus enabled the harvest to take place at the optimal ripening time. The wines from this vintage, which was classified as excellent, have a good colour intensity, significant fruity notes on the nose and a high tannic potential in the mouth, with sweet tannins that indicate the good phenolic ripening of the berries. A vintage reminiscent of the exceptional 2005 vintage.
After the withering in a mild winter, the warm start of spring brought sprouting forward by almost 10 days. The summer, which was quite cool and dry, enabled the good evolution of the growth cycle and a balanced ripening. This was a vintage without setbacks. Worth mentioning is the high production of this vintage due to good climatic behaviour during the harvest. The wines from this vintage have great colour intensity, and a high fruity expression on the nose and in the mouth. Their balance and tannic potential stand out; these features show us the great potential to produce great wines for ageing, and for lighter and fruitier productions.
Convento San Francisco 2013 is a mature, intense and elegant red wine. In this good vintage, the aromas of ripe red fruit stand out with spicy and toasted notes. In the mouth, it is silky, full-bodied and with quite a lingering finish.
Regarding climate, the 2012 vintage started with the sprouting of the vines in the beginning of spring with the cooler temperatures. In May, generous rainfall and high temperatures gave way to a generalised drought throughout the summer. Luckily, the rains started at the onset of the ripening. The precipitations at the beginning of October, and the nice temperatures during the harvest, resulted in the a uniform phenolic ripening. The wines from this vintage have a good alcoholic strength, balanced by moderate levels of acidity, with a good colour and phenolic intensity, and a suitable level of tannins, all important features for a perfect ageing.
After a predictable winter, the weather changed in spring. Temperatures were higher than normal, which caused an early start of the grapes’ ripening cycle. The normal course of the climate at the end of spring and at the beginning of the summer, allowed the vines to recover their usual pace, and the veraison took place on the expected dates. The beginning of the harvest was slightly early due to the strong heat the grapes suffered during their ripening. However, the nice weather throughout the harvest, without rain or frost, provided grapes with an impeccable health. Wines from the 2011 vintage have a slightly higher alcohol strength than usual, with a perfect balance thanks to their natural acidity, concentration of colour and phenolic richness. For all these reasons, this vintage has been classified as excellent, offering high-quality young wines, and wines with the ideal features for their ageing.
Sight Cherry red with purple reflections. Nose Red fruit aromas combined with sweet notes (jam and caramel). Fresh and clean. Taste Fine and elegant on the palate. Passing is embracing and creamy with good presence of fruity flavours. Lightly sweet and good acidity. Very persistent.
Sight A pretty, ripe cherry colour. Clean and bright. Nose In the nose we find nuances of jam, ripe red fruit and caramel. Taste Very elegant attack with a good acidity. Fruit, coffee and chocolate. Tasty and long with a persistent aftertaste.
Sight Intense cherry colour with a maroon edge. Clean and bright. Thin legs which stain the glass. Nose Nice notes of ripe black fruit along with elegant toasted aromas from the wood. When it opens up, some milky and creamy notes are noticed along with some spicy hints. Light final mineral touches. Taste Pleasant and lively attack and with a good presence of fruit. Tasty and unctuous but smooth mid palate. Refined tannins. Good and persistent finish which leaves an elegant creamy aftertaste.
Sight Bright, intense cherry color. Nose I toasted spice aromas, light touches of wood. Taste Boca round and fleshy, powerful tannins that come from aging in wood.
