Characteristics of Conde de Haro Brut Vintage

Conde de Haro Brut Vintage is a cava from Bodegas Muga, one of the most emblematic wineries in Haro and one of the few Spanish wineries with its own cooperage.
Bodegas Muga is located in D.O. Rioja. The climate of this area is very complex and there are influences from Mediterranean climate such as Atlantic and continental.
This cava is a coupage of varieties Viura (90%) and Malvasía (10%) grown in their own vineyards in the winery situated on high north facing sloped areas.
One of the reasons they chose this location and position of the vines, this is because it protects the vines from warm temperatures that can alter the characteristic aromas of the grapes.
The harvest is placed in 15kg crates.
After the selection of the bunches and pressing, the must is placed in 1000 litre wooden deposits where it undergoes its first fermentation. The second fermentation is in the bottle for a total of 14 months.

Tasting notes Conde de Haro Brut Vintage

Sight Yellow colour with green reflections. Bright. Nose On the nose it is predominately acidic fruit and flowers. Notes of honey, vanilla and liquor. Taste On the palate it is sweet and fresh. Great acidity. An aftertaste where the fruits return with a great dominance of spices.

Winery Muga

Cava was born under the constant shadow of its French counterpart, Champagne. However, produced over 1,200km away and a gap of over 100 years, Cava was always going to be a completely different product, even if produced using the same method and and sometimes with the same varieties. Firstly the climate and soil have a profound impact on the yields, while the plant strains that thrive here and completely different to those in the Champagne region. Fortunately, as more winemakers are becoming convinced of this, they are producing Cavas with their own personality, showing off the art of the second fermentation in the bottle like no other wine region in the world.

The Muga family is part of the history of wine of the Haro and Rioja regions. They were first wine traders and then they set up their own winery and started producing their own wines. Their name is now known in more than 50 different countries throughout the world through their wines.
Their experience and artisanal production bring an outstanding quality to their wines.


HISTORY OF THE WINERY 

It all started in 1932 when the couple Isaac Muga and Aurora Cano decided to open a little wine distribution family business in the centre of Haro, in the heart of the Rioja Alta.

In 1968 the little family owned wine shop became a winery, settling in a beautiful 19th century mansion in the Estación de Haro area, now the region with the highest concentration of wineries in the world, where they started to produce their first wines.

Towards the end of the 80s, Bodegas Muga decided to start producing more current wines, with the idea of trying to export their wines on the international market.
Thus, at the start of the 90s, the two greatest successes of the winery were born: the Torre Muga and the Prado Enea.

Today Bodegas Muga exports much of its produce, especially to the United States, where it has always been very well received by both consumers and critics.


WORK PHILOSOPHY 

Bodegas Muga have 200 hectares of vineyards at the foothills of the Obarense mountains, where they harvest Tempranillo, Grenache, Mazuelo and Graciano red grape varieties and Viura and Malvasia white grape varieties. They also control another 150 hectares of farms in the region.

The orientation and location of the vineyards are situated at a crossing-point between Mediterranean, Atlantic and Continental climates, resulting in a perfect climate and environment for grape growing.
The soils are mostly marl, although ferrous clay soils and alluvial soils are also found. These soils are equipped with a special quality specific to the region.
This mix of climates and soil characteristics make the ripening of the grape long and delicate.

The grapes are arranged for different productions, passing through sorting tables by hand to insure quality. The method of work at the winery has changed very little from generation to generation. The grapes ferment in oak vats, make the grapes into wine individually depending on their quality and vineyard of origin.

Aging is done in French and American oak barrels, and to a lesser extent Spanish and Central-European oak barrels. Bodegas Muga has its own coopery, one of the few Spanish wineries that still produce their own barrels. Every 4 months a racking is done by gravity, without moving the barrel and by candlelight in order to see the clarity of the wine better.

The wine is clarified with fresh egg whites, and once bottled remains in the winery for at least 9 months for the vintages and 36 for the Prado Enea Gran Reserva.

Bodegas Muga offers a wide range of wines that in terms of reds range from Muga Crianza, the baby of the family, to the prestigious Torre Muga, and Muga Prado Enea Gran Reserva, which has has been very successful internationally.

Besides the reds, the two jewels of the house must be mentioned: Muga Blanco and Muga Rosado. A white and a rosé that have spent time in barrels and turn out to be truly amazing.
